The ideal outcome has indigenous Europeans and immigrant Muslims finding a way to live together harmoniously and create a new synthesis. A 1991 study, La France, une chance pour l'Islam (France, an Opportunity for Islam), by Jeanne-Helene Kaltenbach and Pierre Patrick Kaltenbach, promoted this idealistic approach. Despite all, this optimism remains the conventional wisdom, as suggested by an Economist leader in 2006 that dismissed, for the moment at least, the prospect of Eurabia as scaremongering. This is the view of most politicians, journalists, and academics, but it has little basis in fact.

Yes, indigenous Europeans could yet rediscover their Christian faith, make more babies and again cherish their heritage. Yes, they could encourage non-Muslim immigration and acculturate Muslims already living in Europe. Yes, Muslim could accept historic Europe. But not only are such developments not under way, their prospects are dim. In particular, young Muslims are cultivating grievances and nursing ambitions at odds with their neighbours.

One can virtually dismiss from consideration the prospect of Muslims accepting historic Europe and integrating within it. American columnist Dennis Prager agrees: "It is difficult to imagine any other future scenario for western Europe than its becoming Islamicised or having a civil war." But which of those two remaining paths will the continent take?

Forecasting is difficult because the crisis has not yet struck. But it may not be far off. Within a decade, perhaps, the continent's evolution will become clear as the Europe-Muslim relationship takes shape.

The unprecedented nature of Europe's situation also renders a forecast exceedingly difficult. Never in history has a civilisation peaceably dissolved, nor has a people risen to reclaim its patrimony. Europe's unique circumstances make the outcome difficult to comprehend, tempting to overlook and virtually impossible to predict. With Europe, we all enter into terra incognita.

“Forcasting” isn’t difficult. Europe, if they don’t stand up to what is going on will fall to Islam. Eurabia? How about the USA.........United States of Arabia?

Your comment raises an interesting point. Whereas once upon a time Germans would have fought for Germany, French for France and Italians for Italy, etc., few, if anyone, is going to want to risk life and limb fighting for something as abstract, removed, icily cold, sterile and unlovable as the European Union. People fight for mom, home and apple pie; they don't fight to maintain the rights and privileges of a bunch of feminized bureaucrats.

Similarly, if there ever were a North American Union, would it last much longer than the time necessary only for it to serve as the substratum for its own Islamicization? Americans will still fight for America. But would they fight for CanAmexico? If they see themselves as drones subject to the whim of far-removed bureaucrats, they will really care who their masters ultimately are?

Europe has no Mulim candidate for occupying the highest office, while we do. Don’t be so smug depicting Europe as a conglomerate of Muslim states when we (US) are swiftly approaching the same situation. The naive opinion of the majority of members of Congress and citizens is still that Islam is a harmless ROP.

You're absolutely right. Since the article was about Europe I posted the "Eurabia" graphic, but I always say on other similar threads that Europe is doing more to combat Muslim immigrants than we are. Geert Wilders, Theodore van Gogh, and the cartoonists were Danish and Dutch, not American. I cannot imagine a single US politician making a film like Fitna. Instead an Opus cartoon that is offensive to Islam is pulled from the Baltimore Sun. Holland banned Iranian students from studying nuclear physics at their universities, while Harvard accepts $20 billion from the Saudis for an Islamic studies department.

I wouldn’t be surprised that the reconquest of the West from Islam, should there be one, will start in Europe and not in the US.

Europe has shown historically that it doesn’t shy away from spilling large amounts of blood on their own soil — French revolution, WWI, Naziism, Stalin in the Ukraine, etc.
