ALBANY (1010 WINS/AP) -- The state Assembly has given final approval to legislation intended to protect teenagers who use social-networking sites from online predators.

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo introduced the Electronic Security and Targeting of Online Predators Act in January. It requires registered sex offenders to provide online screen names to state officials. They would share the identities with Web hangouts like MySpace.com and Facebook.com, who are authorized to prescreen or remove offenders.

It also restricts use of the Internet by certain sex offenders on probation and parole.

The Assembly also passed legislation that would increase criminal penalties for using a computer to commit a sex crime against a child.

Sex offenders, that are a danger to themselves and others, are being used to advance the agenda of removing anonymity on the internet.

Sex offenders who are predators (and not the labeled ones that got caught urinating behind a dumpster) should not be in situations where they can harm again. They should be incarcerated for life. But, instead of incarceration, we all are going to end up having to register our online names.

These laws are going to be implemented state by state in various languages until our online rights are totally infringed.

We should ban pedophiles from situations where they are likely to contact a child. Prevention is the best cure for their behavior - apart from the death penalty for doing it in the first place.

Like this is going to stop anything.

Predator wants a victim in this manner -- how many minutes to get a new unregistered identity? And the penalties are nothing to those of the intended offense.

The politicians are grandstanding, and telling parents their kids are now safe online. Some will believe it.

Until they learn the hard way.

Stupid.

First the sex offenders will have to do this, and then everyone else.

This law is REDUNDANT.

People who have to report to probation HAVE TO PROVIDE ALL ALIASES NOW! The have to provide all contact information NOW, THIS MEANS EMAILS.

This is a pointless law for some other agenda.
