Prelutsky: Making The Case for McCain @ ExileStreet
ExileStreet ^ | 4/14/08 | Burt Prelutsky

Posted on 04/15/2008 5:30:37 AM PDT by ParsifalCA

A while back, I admitted that John McCain was not among my three favorite candidates for the Republican nomination. But I went on to say that if he emerged as the standard bearer for the GOP, he would get my vote. And to tell you the truth, I don’t feel I’ll have to bite the bullet in November so much as maybe gum it a little bit.

Needless to say, I have been hearing from a great many conservative hardliners. Among the things they’ve called me are sell-out, traitor, closet liberal and a mole for the Democrats. When a few of them settled for calling me a fool or an idiot, it almost felt like a compliment. [more @ ExileStreet]

“Then there were those Neanderthals who insisted they’d stay home in November or even vote for the Democrat in order to send a message to the GOP. These galoots seem to be stuck in a time warp. I tried my best to point out that it’s been a long time since a few big city bosses went into a smoke-filled room and emerged with a presidential candidate. In one primary after another, McCain took on and defeated all the Republican contenders. It was like watching Joe Louis in the old days, dispatching the likes of Tony Galento and Tami Mauriello on a regular basis, while barely breaking a sweat.”

“So, first things first. If the single greatest accomplishment John McCain performs is to keep Mr. Obama, the slogan-spouting radical, and Mrs. Clinton, the woman who never met a tax she didn’t want to raise, out of the White House, we’ll all owe him an enormous debt of gratitude.”

And said debt will quickly be forgotten when President McCain implements policies that are further to the left of anything that Sen. Obama or Sen. Clinton could actually accomplish were they to be elected.

Just another “conservative” rationalizing the purchase of their ticket on the Pure Bull Express.

This has been posted before, although possibly with a different title. I remember commenting on the fact that a journalist, supposedly a professional writer, couldn’t manage to promote McCain without repeatedly namecalling(Neanderthals, galoots) those who won’t vote for him.

As my debate teacher in high school used to say, “If you can’t defend your position without insulting your opponent, you’ve already lost the debate.”

If you can’t defend your position without insulting your opponent, you’ve already lost the debate.

Sometimes it's hard though. If, for example, you say: "My democratic opponent states . . . " haven't you really just hurled a mortal insult?

“’My democratic opponent states...’haven’t you really just hurled a mortal insult?”

LOL, in my book, if you called a Democrat democratic, you’ve complimented him and insulted the rest of us.

I remember in debate class being given the position to defend that bottle feeding was better than breastfeeding. I thought for sure I’d lose, until my opponent said, “Women who don’t breastfeed are bad mothers.” That was an insult, so I won the debate by default.

I find it telling that so many McCain supporters feel compelled to resort to insults.

Actually, I deliberately added the unnatural "ic" in my post to remove the faux indignation by the left about the issue. :) That would have made it an insult that they understood. In my book, either is an insult. It implies that one is so stupid that one affiliates with a group with no moral or reasoned basis for existing.

I should add that I believe John McCain is a terrible candidate for both policy and personality reasons and that he will do terrible damage to the Republican party, conservatives, and to America. Perhaps a little less terrible than Obama or HRC; but terrible nevertheless.

If 'terrible' is an insult, so be it. I regard it as a well-reasoned conclusion supported by decades of empirical data. Conservatives have clearly lost the debate--America well into its decline and fall and we have candidates that reflect that. And perhaps 'insults' are why. But the real loser in 2008 is my beloved country.

McCain supporters feel compelled to insult nonsupporters, just as Prelutsky is doing, because the case for McCain is so weak.

I don’t have a problem with calling McCain a terrible candidate, it’s the truth, he’s more than earned the opprobrium, and politics is no place for the thin-skinned.

And I completely agree with your post.

I can live with it for now. What I can’t live with would be myself if I didn’t vote for every “R” on the ticket from Dog Catcher on up.

My plan is to start at the Local and State levels and get rid of ALL RINOs. I truly don’t care who holds the Presidency, as long as we re-take the Senate and pad our seats in the House. Pelosi and Reid are giving us plenty of opportunities to do that. It truly should not be all that hard, considering the current times and how ineffectual they are. :)

We’re doing well at the state level here in Wisconsin. We’ve managed to rid ourselves of FOUR “Progressives” from our Dane County Board. We now have Judge Gableman (R) on our Supreme Court, which tips the court back to conservative, much to the chagrin of the Lefties in this state. Tee-Hee!

We got Scott Walker (R) re-elected (in a landslide) as Milwaukee County Exec; he’ll be our Governor one of these years. :)

And lots of other little “victories” for the (R)’s all across Wisconsin, that are turning the tide. :)

Slow and steady wins the race. Don’t allow the Media to basically cast your vote. They make a HUGE deal out of the Presidency, when it’s the local underpinnings that make the REAL difference in one’s Quality of Life.

I agree. He was last on my list of Republicans. "Straight talk" (unbelievably misguided/confused/_______/_______ at times) is better than forked-tonqued, hidden agenda, LIE TO YOUR FACE SOCIALISTS. I have voted in every election since I could. I have protest voted Libertarian once before. I haven't voted for a 'rat in 28 years.

I’ve been called childish, stupid, unAmerican, unpatriotic, a traitor to the troops and personally responsible for the next terror attack, an attack in which that particular Freeper hoped I or my children would be injured or killed. All because I won’t vote for McCain. Yep, McCain has some real nice people supporting him on this site.

And I’ve been called the same (and more) for supporting him.

And my response is the same as your Mom’s...if one has to stoop that low...they clearly lack the intellectual capacity for a good debate.

I have yet to insult anybody who has made a different electoral choice than I have.

Insult candidates? Yep, guilty as charged. But I draw the line at insulting other Freepers who disagree with me, even those who call me a whiner.

Have a nice day.

Well, you were whining. But if you haven’t engaged in the snarky sniping that has gone on, then good on you.
