BLACK MONDAY: 450 New Line Jobs Axed

This is an incredibly sad day for hundreds of New Line Cinema employees. Because Time Warner is notifying them today and tomorrow that 450 positions will be eliminated in the reorganization to absorb the studio by Warner Bros. Some 40 to 50 employees will remain with New Line and about 40 others will be offered jobs at Warner Bros. I’m told the layoffs will be effective the end of June. An insider reveals that, among the many layoffs, the entire physical production department is being shuttered and that Kate Beyda is going to run the newly reorganized company’s physical production arm.

Does this mean we’ll see fewer films glorifying violent criminals and slashers?

New Line never figured out why people liked LOTR so produced The Golden Compass. Same concept, right?

If you think Warners will do better, they fought against Babylon 5. Could not figure it out either. The mindset of most major studios is less imaginative than a vacant lot.

Hopefully the idiots who green-lighted The Golden Compass are among those who lost their jobs.

If you have ever wondered whether or not the voice of the common man and community outrage can have an effect on major corporations, this should answer your question. If it had not been for community outrage and the actions of tens of thousands of people who opposed The Golden Compass, that film might have been a financial success. Instead it tanked, and dragged the studio down with it.

This cautionary example will reverberate in Hollywood for a long, long time.
