The reason he's working so hard on his wife's behalf is that he sincerely believes she would make a good president, better than he was, if daughter Chelsea's word is taken to heart. He's also doing penance for how much he humiliated her when he was president, and even for some of his missteps in this campaign, mostly having to do with race. But perhaps most important, Clinton understands that if Barack Obama is elected, his presidency becomes an asterisk.
Clinton was forced to play defense, too often settling for mainly symbolic gestures like advocating school uniforms when only two years into his term the Republicans won control of both houses of Congress for the first time in 40 years. Clinton knows that through the long view of history, he'll be viewed a lot less positively if the bridge he set about building to the next century leads to a president with the ability to overshadow him legislatively, as opposed to one who carries on his name and legacy.
Obama rankled Clinton earlier in the campaign when he remarked in an interview that Ronald Reagan was a transformational president, seeming to dismiss the eight Clinton years as incidental and setting Reagan as a benchmark for success. The Clinton campaign went berserk, accusing Obama of aligning himself with a president who didn't want to raise the minimum wage. But that wasn't Obama's point.
You didn't have to agree with Reagan's policies to recognize the impact he made on the direction of the country, good and bad, and the lasting impression he left on the national psyche. Reagan-style optimism is the gold standard in politics, and if there's an heir apparent today it's Obama, with his message of hope, not Hillary and her workmanlike solutions for America.

Something to consider.
The Democrats will find some way to keep the Clintons in line. If I were Harry Reid, I would begin to consider the advantages of a truly fine retirement home.
In your dreams Eleanor Cleft Palate. The Pillaried One has no legislative history. Zero. Nothing worthwhile has passed in a do nothing democrat majority senate since she has been in it. Zip has her name on it, like McCain/Finegold, Sarbanes/Oxley.
What leadership? Her impeached hubby raised the bucks for the DNC.
Democratic staffers? You're not a staffer, Eleanor Cliff Dweller. The Pants Suit's staffers, maybe.
yitbos
Now she sees that Hillary has scant chance of getting the nomination, she's making the Senate bed for her to sleep in (with a lifetime guarantee).
Why do magazines keep people like her — not a journalistic bone in her body. It's all BIAS, BIAS, BIAS when it comes to E. Clift.
At least she's consistent (when it comes to brown nosing).
Fifteen or sixteen years have gone by, yet seemingly nothing has changed at Newsweek. How can Eleanor Clift possibly even breathe with her lips so firmly planted on Bill Clinton’s - er, never mind...
You know, my husband worked in Nevada for nearly two years. It required a move, for him, to a 40 foot motor home and for me to shuttle back and forth.
We found, for the most part, that Nevadans were intelligent, independent thinking folks, so we have always viewed the election, multiple times, of the unintelligent con man, Harry Reid, with absolute amazement.
Good thing Eleanor wrote this, so the little people could understand.
And if Bill Clinton's legacy depended on Barack Obama not getting the nomination, there wasn't much there to begin with. Clinton's legacy is a reflection of his time in office, not some other politician.
If Obama becomes POTUS, it is over for the Clintons and they know it. No try again in 2012, no nothing...
An amazing picture, besides the underlying (pun) message.
Thisis interesting. Clift is one ofthe most egregious Kool Aid drinkers for the Clintons ever. If she is starting to sound lukewarm about the Clintons that is really serious.
Anybody buying that horsecr@p? Bill, sorry for anything?
Bill has raked in millions in the form of donations to his library and speech making and some business deals.
Hillary has to be elected for him to do pay back. Believe me, he is in hock to lord knows how many people.
