Bush prepares global warming initiative

President Bush is poised to change course and announce as early as this week that he wants Congress to pass a bill to combat global warming, and will lay out principles for what that should include.

Specifics of the policy are still being fiercely debated, but Bush administration officials have told Republicans in Congress that they feel pressure to act now because they fear a coming regulatory nightmare. It would be the first time Mr. Bush has called for statutory authority on the subject.

"This is an attempt to move the administration and the party closer to the center on global warming. With these steps, it is hoped that the debate over this is over, and it is time to do something," said an administration source close to the White House who is familiar with the planning and who said to expect an announcement this week.

The source requested anonymity to be able to speak on a sensitive matter still under debate. Given the arguments at the White House over the extent of the action to take, it is not clear exactly what Mr. Bush will propose, the adminstration source said.

IOW our Republican leaders surrender to the left AGAIN.

compromise should be moving them to our side not the ratchet reverse.

Bush’s strategy of working with the rats has been an utter failure. This initiative will fail miserably. It will open the door for an almost unlimited regime of regulation, taxes, and drastic lifestyle restrictions. The rats should be treated as the enemy. If the rats take control in 2009, let them impose their draconian control. Conservatives need to maintain fierce opposition to this madness.

This man is completely lost. He now stands for nothing!

Open the borders, bankrupt the nation and then cozy up to the Goreist imbeciles.

“he wants Congress to pass a bill to combat global warming”

He wants Congress to dial down the sun a little bit. Boy, THAT”S power!

In other words, the WaPo is talking out of their a$$, but won't miss any chance of bashing Bush for any reason whatsoever, and if that means making him look back with conservatives, that's even better!

I’m skeptical of anything they say and will withhold getting pissed off until the administration actually announces something.

AMEN! Could it be that someone is working hard to make Republicans in general, and conservatives in particular, angry in advance of the 2008 election?

Sadly, as this thread has shown, that strategy seems to work all too well.

It will be too late then, we need to come down like a ton of bricks on them now.

It's a great idea to let the administration know that you are firmly against any sort of initiative that accepts the concept of human-induced global warming.

I just don't think people need to go off the deep end when we don't know for sure they are even planning on doing this.

Never hurts to let them know where you stand while they're considering such things though.

It’s the Washington TIMES not the WAPO.

Same idea; someone is taking un-named sources, and making it sound as though the President is selling out conservatives. In fact, according to the headline, it sounds as though the President has already made up his mind. I haven’t seen anything official from this Administration, about any changes in their ideas about Global Warming. The only official comments I’ve ever heard from the White House is that AGW is NOT settled science, and decisions that would be hard to reverse, and could harm the economy should not be made based on it. AFter all, that’s why they rejected the Kyoto Protocol. THAT’S why this story is suspicious to me.

This is all about total government control, which includes eventually restricting or severely limiting independent movement or travel.

This administration will eventually be seen as Nixon II. Some of our worst domestic legislation was passed during the Nixon Administration—and during Bush II. Looks like George is trying to equal or exceed Nixon.

I e-mailed the Prez and Vice-Prez.

Cheney has got to be getting sick of the Global Warming stuff...unless he’s been brainwashed as well.
