Target: Bin Laden
Los Angeles Times ^ | April 13, 2008 | Steve Coll

Posted on 04/13/2008 6:19:09 AM PDT by moderatewolverine

Osama bin Laden lives among friends, follows news on satellite television or the Internet and reads books about American foreign policy; this much can be safely inferred from his periodic audio and video statements. His latest topical punditry surfaced just a few weeks ago on jihadi websites when he addressed violence in Gaza and the pope's travels.

Because of his passable grasp of current events, Bin Laden may well understand what many Americans do not: that he is more likely to be killed or captured during the next year or so than at any time since late 2001, when he escaped U.S. warplanes bombing him in eastern Afghanistan, at Tora Bora.

This welcome change in probabilities has almost nothing to do with the Bush administration's counter-terrorism strategy, which remains rudderless and starved of resources because of the war in Iraq. It is a consequence, instead, of dramatic political changes in Pakistan, where Bin Laden is believed to be hiding and where Al Qaeda's local mistakes and the restoration of civilian democracy have combined to make him considerably less safe.

if someone would equip me and deposit a large amount of money in an account for my children, I'd have a project on my hands...

and I always get the job done.

The writer is an idiot. And, if Nobama’s elected to the presidency, bin Laden will be given a cabinet post. LOL

I could imagine the staffer who gets to introduce the two of them:

"Osama, Obama. Obama, Osama."

OBL is an ally of and would be a welcome guest in almost any member of Congress’s home. Liberals and RINO’s never met a terrorist they didn’t feel sorry for or want to surrender to. Today’s Congress is a national disgrace of epic proportion.

If he were still alive we’d still be seeing actual videos from him.

Perhaps someday someone somewhere will ask one of these liberals what Al Qaeda’s goal is. When they figure that out, maybe they’ll figure out that it is going to be pretty hard to re-establish the Caliphate without its capitol.

You really think so? I’m skeptical of his existence but still not sure what to believe...I do like hearing that educated and informed citizens feel that way though.

Coll is a friggin’ phony. He always pounds on Tora Bora and Bin Laden escaping because the “specially trained 10th Mountain Division, which was ideally suited for the mission” wasn’t sent in to hunt him down.”

Total bullcrap. The 10th Mountain Division is an excellent infantry division, but it has NO special mountain warfare capability and is only referred to as the 10th Mtn to pay tribute to its WW2 legacy. There isn’t even a high hill at Fort Drum where it is based.

That is pure laziness and ignorance for a reporter to get that wrong.

What else is lazy about Coll is the fact that, if you really drill down and do the research, Bin Laden has provided absolutely no proof of life in years. Meanwhile Zawahiri has done so dozens of times, as have other AQ personalities.

The FACTS are that, not only is there nothing truly to suggest that Bin Laden is reading books about US foreign policy, there is NOTHING to suggest that he is alive.

Nah. He's going to stay in hiding for 20 years than be named a Distinguished Professor of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Just like Obama's buddy.

Since we have NOT in the past several years seen ONE tape of this degenerate that can be attributed to current times, my belief is he is and has been dead for quite awhile.

I do think so. Remember, we got videos in the early days after 9/11, but after we went into Afghanistan (and if I recall after Tora Bora), we got no more "fresh" videos. The audio tapes after that were all suspect, and online postings...? Give me a break.

We don't have proof that he's dead, any more than we had regarding Jimmy Hoffa, but nobody believed Jimmy Hoffa was hiding out in a cave in Afghanistan for all that was a possibility. *\;-)

You are correct. Now the guardsmen at the mountain school here in VT now a little something about mountain fighting.

Back in the 60’s(?)when a nuclear submarine was lost, and again when an H-bomb fell off a B-52, teams were assembled to try to pinpoint the locations. They used a non-conventional technique and came up with answers markedly different than the current thinking. I think there’s a reference to it in “Blind Man’s Bluff”. That same technique should be tried for finding OBL.

late 2001, when he escaped U.S. warplanes

Dying of pneumonia might be considered an escape from the bombs.
