An Italian woman artist who was hitch-hiking to the Middle East dressed as a bride to promote world peace has been found murdered in Turkey.
The naked body of Giuseppina Pasqualino di Marineo, 33, known as Pippa Bacca, was found in bushes near the northern city of Gebze on Friday.
She had said she wanted to show that she could put her trust in the kindness of local people.
Turkish police say they have detained a man in connection with the killing.
Reports say the man led the police to the body.
Ms di Marineo was hitch-hiking from Milan to Israel and the Palestinian Territories with a fellow artist on their "Brides on Tour" project.
They had separated in Istanbul, planning to reunite in Beirut.
Ms di Marineo was last seen on 31 March in Gebze.
An Italian embassy official told the Associated Press news agency police tracked the man when he put a new SIM card into Ms di Marineo's mobile phone.
Local media identified the suspect only by the initials MK and said he had a previous conviction for theft.
Ms di Marineo's sister, who had gone to Turkey to look for her, identified the body. An autopsy is being conducted in Istanbul.
"Her travels were for an artistic performance and to give a message of peace and of trust, but not everyone deserves trust," another sister, Maria, told the Italian news agency, Ansa.

Amen!
Who are you to say what is evil? The only evil here is your intolerance and arrogance in thinking you can define evil for others. The man was a practicing homicidal artist and he created a scene called "peaceful nude in the woods". You Right-wingers with your Bachelor of Science degrees just have no appreciation for the Liberal Arts.
Didn’t some muzzy say that women outside of burkas were like laying meat before the lions?
(Animals. Not humans.)
I believe as Anne Frank that people are basically good at heart. There are evil people and always a need for the sheep dog; but, people basically are good.
I think this a conservative value actually. You can trust the innate goodness of people. The are not inherently evil needing the power of the state to force them against their nature.
This is definitely tragic, but, my God what in Hell is wrong with people?
Darwin award? Suicide by hitch hiking?
Bush’s fault, I suppose.
After looking at Pippa's art on her website I have come to believe that Pippa was not just your average dumb liberal. I fear she was mentally retarded and really had the naive mind of a child. It is too bad her family wasn't able to stop this girl from going on such a naive odyssey.
Not unexpected, but still a very sad story.
Prayers for her friends and family.
I'm not the type who who mocks those who have a legitimate disability.
On a much lower level eBay was founded on that philosophy. For the most part most sellers and buyers are honest in their dealings but bad apples are there too and caution is always prudent.
Mohammed, perhaps?
I figured on something being wrong. Every picture has her mouth hanging open and the look of 2.5 neurons firing.
God rest her soul and many prayers for her and her family. She was too naive and trusting, but that should not have been a death sentence.
You are correct, it isn't fair that making just one small mistake shouldn't be a death sentence.
What does fairness have to do with it? It isn't fair, but she is still dead.
What is not fair is that there are people who teach that kind of stuff. What is unfair is that those who teach this garbage aren't the ones who suffer the consequences of their garbage beliefs.
It is entirely foreseeable that going into a dangerous place will lead to unwanted results.
What are the odds that they sing “Kumbaya” at the funeral?
That a woman shouldn't be hitchhiking alone in a muslim country?
Just spit-balling here...
Mark
Sad. But I have the same reaction to people who still say they don’t lock their doors.
