Obama on small-town PA: Clinging religion, guns, xenophobia
Politico.com ^ | 04/11/08 | Ben Smith

Posted on 04/11/2008 1:08:33 PM PDT by JRochelle

Mayhill Fowler has more from Obama's remarks at a San Francisco fundraiser Sunday, and they include an attempt to explain the resentment in small-town Pennsylvania that won't be appreciated by some of the people whose votes Obama's seeking:

You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them...And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not.

And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

That's pretty broad list of things to explain with job loss.

Behold the David Sirota spin:

McCain Said It, Before He Attacked It

Snip:

John McCain’s campaign is attacking Barack Obama for Obama’s rather indisputable comments about the rise of anti-immigrant fervor in small town America. Obama said that the rise of such fervor has a lot to do with bitterness.

But wait - didn’t John McCain say something similar in December to The New Yorker?

Anti-immigrant passion also owes much to the disproportionate influence of a few small states in the nominating process. National polls show that, as an issue, immigration is far behind the Iraq war, terrorism, the economy, and health care as a concern to most Americans; a recent Pew poll shows that, nationally, only six per cent of voters offer immigration as the most important issue facing the country. But in Iowa and South Carolina, two of the three most important early states, it is a top concern for the Republicans who are most likely to vote.

“It’s the influx of illegals into places where they’ve never seen a Hispanic influence before,” McCain told me. “You probably see more emotion in Iowa than you do in Arizona on this issue. I was in a town in Iowa, and twenty years ago there were no Hispanics in the town. Then a meatpacking facility was opened up. Now twenty per cent of their population is Hispanic. There were senior citizens there who were—’concerned’ is not the word. They see this as an assault on their culture, what they view as an impact on what have been their traditions in Iowa, in the small towns in Iowa. So you get questions like ‘Why do I have to punch 1 for English?’ ‘Why can’t they speak English?’ It’s become larger than just the fact that we need to enforce our borders.”

— Um, where’s the gun-grabbing, church-clasping and anti-trade?
Love that misdirection, projection and dissembling... it’s so Trotsky with a pinch of Huggy Bear.

Maybe McCain’s senior citizens had guns? I think not.
BTW, sounds like Iowa would know when they see an influx of illegals and where the jobs and taxes go... still can’t tell if Mc can see it though.

But the problem is Obama is so anti-trade himself!

He sure campaigned against NAFTA in Ohio.

Yep, all that ACORN/Project Vote fraud, mucking up voting sites, smokes for votes, etc. helped too.

I stumped eight weekends in PA.

lol, If you’re suggesting that Rendell would do anything to fix the elections, that’s a given in Pennsylvania.

Dead democrats have been voting in Philadelphia for decades.

Oh, and let’s not forget ACORN is a former client of Obama’s and we know he worked on getting votes.

Can you say East St. Louis?

Yes, he campaigned against Free trade, but then he had one of his campaign advisors call the Canadians and tell them not to pay any attention, that it was just campaign rhetoric.

He stole this part from McQueeg’s thoughts.

“antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”

You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them....

I don't suppose that it ever crossed Obama's mind that if it had not been for the incessent, unrelenting, destructive, and unlimately fatal demands from the socialst unions.....

.... there would still be those jobs there in "a lot of small towns in the Midwest"...

God! Obama is an arrogant jerk....How in the world did the U.S. get into this position...

ans....one man one vote....

....we are so screwed!

You should hear Monica Crowley on Barack on WABC radio.

She’s breaking down class warfare.

The immigration issue is really quite over.

We are going to get an intermittent fence. Whoopee! Tighten that old border right up. Yessirree bob! Any illegal alien trying to burn down the White House, and gets caught, might even be deported. And harshly. Take that, foreign villain! Might take him 3-4 weeks to get back to mamacita and the niños. New name of course.

They'll be waiting. Because his anchor niños are citizens; won't be deported nor will be their mother. McCain and the other recumbents looked about and did some simple arithmetic. They apparently decided that arithmetic is an older law than American law, .

We are going to be a country with at least a 25 percent Latino population before 2050, whether or not (probably not) anyone does anything, or everything about illegal immigration. No one who needs votes can turn down a bloc that size.

Deport'em? Hell no, we'll be bringing in more. Why we've barely scratched the surface of Mexico. Plenty more of them. Central America? Brazil? Jackpot, baby! 100 million strappin' their hiking shoes on as we speak. Hell, they might even try driving up, as many illegals from Belize do to get to LA!

National polls show that, as an issue, immigration is far behind the Iraq war, terrorism, the economy, and health care as a concern to most Americans;...

The political boys know that there really isn't any deep-down national will to reform immigration, so why should they? Every year, fewer people remember America as we once were and only know the dumbed-down European-heritage minority country we are becoming.

Why do I have to punch 1 for English?’ ‘Why can’t they speak English?’ It’s become larger than just the fact that we need to enforce our borders.”

That's right, McC. Boobus Americanus has not yet made the connection between stoutly defended borders and "Oprime número dos para español" so why would he?

Call it the B-1 Bob Dornan lesson. This charming CA meathead congressman ignored constituent complaints about illegal immigration for years, including mine ... until Loretta Sanchez used illegal immigrants to scam him out of office. McCain has to run for President. If he didn't, an Hispanic would soon boot him from the Senate in Arizona, which is well on it's way to an Hispanic majority... and membership in Aztlán.

The saddest thing to me is that in the upcoming election, illegal immigration ant the attendant evils are being studiously left off the table. Big tough Chertoff just may deport a thousand illegals here and there during the election year ... out of 25 million. Great merdia# event.

#I don't really feel like correcting that.
