Obama on small-town PA: Clinging religion, guns, xenophobia
Politico.com ^ | 04/11/08 | Ben Smith

Mayhill Fowler has more from Obama's remarks at a San Francisco fundraiser Sunday, and they include an attempt to explain the resentment in small-town Pennsylvania that won't be appreciated by some of the people whose votes Obama's seeking:

You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them...And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not.

And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

That's pretty broad list of things to explain with job loss.

All this switching to participate in the other party's primaries is making me itch. Kind of like charging drinks at the VFW when you belong to the Elks.

I think it also has had the effect of keeping Mrs. Clinton alive, which means no one is focused on Algonquin J. Obama's real views and bonafides. Instead, we are consumed by the entertaining battle between him and Mrs. Clinton. By now, the fight should have been on between McCain (My God, McCain!) and the Golden-Tongued Anointed One, Prince of Hawaii,Kenya, Cambridge, and Chicago.

It’s disgusting that this man is not considered a fringe candidate.

Agreed. Shows you what Alan Keyes might have accomplished had he been smoother and more photogenic.

Fred, If Mrs. Clinton wins PA by any margin, it’s still a win. It keeps her alive and spinning and it keeps the distracting, entertaining fight between her and Obama on page 1.

What belongs on page 1 is an exposé of the half-caste-half-assed marxist’s real views.

I don't disagree with that, however, just as you don't want to peak too soon, we don't want the Obamassiah to "trough" too soon either. He's spending a ton of his money and that's a GOOD THING. McCain will never be able to compete with the money BHO is raising. Second, there are a lot of moderates and independents (read: morons who vote based on the last yard sign they see before they head into the fire hall) who will NOT remember Wright, or this misstep come November. We need to keep our powder dry on BHO until after the Conventions. HRC is helping us do that.

And the spin begins. Obama`s “cleaned up” version of what he said earlier.

“People don’t vote on economic issues because they don’t expect anybody is going to help them,” Obama told a crowd at a Terre Haute, Ind., high school Friday evening. “So people end up voting on issues like guns and are they going to have the right to bear arms. They vote on issues like gay marriage. They take refuge in their faith and their community, and their family, and the things they can count on. But they don’t believe they can count on Washington.”

CNN is trying to mitigate the damage by claiming the controversial “word” was when Obama said “bitter”. It was actually the way he claimed that small towns “cling” on to guns and religion.

I live in Western Pennsylvania.

All of Western Pennsylvania is considered “small towns”.

There are more churches per capita in Western Pennsylvania than anywhere on the face of this earth. The church ladies make the best pierogies anywhere.

The elites of both coasts don’t understand America. Western Pennsylvania and our small towns *IS* America.

I am extremely insulted at this elitist snob from Chicago trying to tell us in America what we do “wrong”.

I was one who changed registration (temporarily, of course), just to continue the chaos in the democratic primary. However, my good conscience won’t allow me to pull that lever. I had no republican primary elections to worry about, so I’m skipping pulling any lever for president to continue the chaos, both of the democrats are an insult to America. Does Obama even realize that Western PA is FULL of military? FULL of good Americans who regularly practice their faith? Excuse us for not attending sermons preached by Jeremiah Wright. And, why don’t we ever see him saluting the military? Or standing with a soldier?

While McCain is not my preferred candidate, I think he has an extremely good chance of winning Pennsylvania’s electoral votes in November. This state is relatively conservative (sans the corruption of Philadelphia).

And we all live in small towns.

We need to keep our powder dry on BHO

(1)Agreed, especially since it seems McC isn't going to raise all that much powder.

(2)About the money. The Obamassiah (you, see I steal from everyone ... like Bill Clinton)has promised not to take public money. Of course, he will take the money. And that money, specifically that money he's legally allowed to keep, will make him a millionaire many times over. He (or some typical white guy on his staff) is an absolute wizard at raising money on the Internet. Staggering sums. Obamanators (People who for some sick reason want Obamanation) have been kicking in $50-100 on their debit cards... many of them over and over. Unbelievable tidal wave of money. Throw in the fat cats, and you have a pile to make even Michelle Obama happy, cracker!

Kerry creamed about $17!! Million. Ralph Nader has been doing it for years. Even Pat Buchanan creamed about $7 or 8 Mill. Perfectly legal. What's left over from private contributions, and then the matching funds ... after all campaign debts are paid, is the candidate's.

No. You would rather have Kerry, a do-nothing. Ted's "accomplishments," e.g., The Immigration Reform Act of 1965, have ruined America.

He, of course is a drunken slob who generally doesn't know what day it is. But he has a huge staff of leftist wonks churning out socialist crap on a daily basis. They affect every bill they can that comes out of the Senate with riders and amendments that always turn out to be harmful.

Ted is No 1 reason your children and grandchildren need to know Spanish. Isn't that enough for you?

HA! Fast Eddie could throw the state's electoral votes to Lassie. Singlehandedly. What? You forgot the way Pennsylvanians all voted Republican .... except for Bush .... 10's of thousands of mysterious ballots with no other vote except for President. You forgot the Russian legal residents ...but non-citizens ...that Fast Eddie registered in Philly? Of course a friendly judge threw out those registrations ... after the election .... in which their votes counted!

Notice that in his statement he does mention PA but he broadens it to most small towns in the Midwest.

PA small town voters have a reason to be livid, as do a lot of the small towns across the Midwest.

Thudd gets it. I liked the rest of your post, too, but this one is the money quote.

I don’t know what you’re talking about.

In 2004, Bush lost this state by less votes than the margin in Ohio. Remember Ohio? The state the MSM claimed was “SO CLOSE”? Well, PA was closer.

McCain has a great chance of winning Pennsylvania. Rendell’s sleaziness notwithstanding.

So Obama is a know-it-all. He “knows” what’s wrong with the country, even though his view of the country is erroneous.

Yes. You are correct. Now how did that slim margin come about? That is the question no one in the Commonwealth ever seems willing to address.

Does it seem normal to you that the winning margin may well have been those suspicious ballots with ONLY the Presidential Choice marked or punched?

In 2000, Santorum carried the state convincingly .... yet Bush did not. Seem Kosher to you?

He is not trash...he is ignorant and should not be President of this United States on a platform of ending division.

I was raised in the city. Had lots of minority friends. Walked the street to any kind of service I wanted. Went to the pool and recreation center on my own as a child, walked to school and so on. It was real freedom...I thought. Never a day went by that I didn't meet a friend on the street and stop to chat. There was never a dull moment. And then my world ended..or so I thought.

We moved to “the country”.

Oh Lordy I thought...racists, hicks and incestuous pedophiles everywhere. The worst thing...I'm stuck ten miles away from main street with no sidewalks.

The first part of my new misery was to start when I began school in the area. The amazing thing...the kids sat still and listened to the teacher...unlike the city where the teacher spent most of their time dealing with the out of control attention seekers.

I thought, well this is good, I'd like to learn something for a change...

My next “strange” experience was being invited to church just for “fun” by my peers and meeting the parents in their homes. Wow...imagine that, no just meeting on the street...you had to go make nice with the parents (what were they?). It was quaint and sort of comforting. The kindness and manners they displayed were enough to make you think there was a gentler world after all. Best thing of all, I didn't have to prove to anyone that I could kick their butt on a back alley so I could socialize. So I'm thinking...ahkay, so where are the cow tipping, cross burning maniacs? I hadn't seen any yet, but I was sure they would be showing up any day now.

That was forty years ago....and I would never...repeat...never raise a child in the city again.

I work in the city and I still have my minority friends but I've run across a few of the “historians” who don't treat me kindly when the hear about where I live. I just have to laugh at them. They don't have a clue what the rest of the world is about.

People who think that small town people are bitter and lowly are just plain ignorant...like I was.
