Petraeus Points to War With Iran
Townhall.com ^ | Pat Buchanan

Posted on 04/11/2008 6:24:55 AM PDT by StatenIsland

The neocons may yet get their war on Iran.

Ever since President Nouri al-Maliki ordered the attacks in Basra on the Mahdi Army, Gen. David Petraeus has been laying the predicate for U.S. air strikes on Iran and a wider war in the Middle East.

Iran, Petraeus told the Senate Armed Services Committee, has "fueled the recent violence in a particularly damaging way through its lethal support of the special groups."

These "special groups" are "funded, trained, armed and directed by Iran's Quds Force with help from Lebanese Hezbollah. It was these groups that launched Iranian rockets and mortar rounds at Iraq's seat of government (the Green Zone) ... causing loss of innocent life and fear in the capital."

Is the Iranian government aware of this -- and behind it?

"President Ahmadinejad and other Iranian leaders" promised to end their "support for the special groups," said the general, but the "nefarious activities of the Quds force have continued."

Are Iranians then murdering Americans, asked Joe Lieberman:

"Is it fair to say that the Iranian-backed special groups in Iraq are responsible for the murder of hundreds of American soldiers and thousands of Iraqi soldiers and civilians?"

"It certainly is. ... That is correct," said Petraeus.

The following day, Petraeus told the House Armed Services Committee, "Unchecked, the 'special groups' pose the greatest long-term threat to the viability of a democratic Iraq."

Translation: The United States is now fighting the proxies of Iran for the future of Iraq.

The general's testimony is forcing Bush's hand, for consider the question it logically raises: If the Quds Force and Hezbollah, both designated as terrorist organizations, are arming, training and directing "special groups" to "murder" Americans, and rocket and mortar the Green Zone to kill our diplomats, and they now represent the No. 1 threat to a free Iraq, why has Bush failed to neutralize these base camps of terror and aggression?

Hence, be not surprised if President Bush appears before the TV cameras, one day soon, to declare:

"My commanding general in Iraq, David Petraeus, has told me that Iran, with the knowledge of President Ahmadinejad, has become a privileged sanctuary for two terrorist organizations -- Hezbollah and the Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard -- to train, arm and direct terrorist attacks on U.S. and coalition forces, despite repeated promises to halt this murderous practice.

"I have therefore directed U.S. air and naval forces to begin air strikes on these base camps of terror. Our attacks will continue until the Iranian attacks cease."

There is definitely a score to settle with Iran, sooner the better. Getting that ball rolling would be a great swan-song for GWB.

Indeed, I am still waiting for an apology to the USA for Iran taking the hostages.

What makes me ill is the way that crazed nutjob, the President of Iran, was welcomed by the government of Iraq, like he was a bosom buddy. Makes you remember that all those crazed Muslims are, at the end of the day, crazed Muslims. We can’t trust any of them. Don’t rely on this war bringing us a trusted ally in Iraq.

Who are we to complain? We let Ahmadinejad (and Khatami) enter the USA and specifically New York TWICE. You may say that US officials didn’t welcome those thugs, but we WERE bowing down and had US security forces give security to these terrorist leaders!

It’ll end up being a lost opportunity like when you had western armies helping the Whites against the Reds in Russian in 1918+ . We could have killed the USSR in its crib but didn’t have the stomach after World War I.

I think Pat’s only problem is he writes in a manner that is too intellectual for the common folk. I think too many neo-cons spend too much time looking at these issues as singular events or problems. They are failing to grasp the bigger picture. I don’t think people are understanding the enormity of the problem and just what it would take to actually solve the problem at hand. It’s much bigger than the dork in Tehran.

This column is a good example of why I never pay any attention to anything that comes from Pat Buchanan. He is a perfect idiot, despite all pretence to the contrary.

The column does not even give the slightest attention to the significance of what Iran has been doing to us for years or how Iranian terrorists ARE killing many Americans.

No, all that Pat cares about is bashing “neo-cons” and he cannot even rationally discuss pros and cons and different approaches to dealing with the Iranian terrorist menace.

The US against the world. First Afghanistan, then Iraq, now Iran, then...?

Didn't Bush say he was against nation-building? That's what this amounts to, in trying to take on the whole world. A better plan would be to deport all the Muslims in OUR country, seal the borders, and live our lives. Why do we have to go over THERE? We're almost bankrupt as it is, AND we're on the verge of a recession/depression (created by our greedy banking institutions). Where is the money for yet ANOTHER war supposed to come from??? If some other country wants to try and take on the enemy, on enemy lands, let them. Why does it have to be US?

Ah, only had to read two words to see the Buchanan hallmark.

Thanks, Pat, for the early warning. Saved me a lot of effort reading your crap.

There’s a minor matter of 444 days that has yet to be addressed.

There's another small matter as well. There are 243 Marines crying out to be avenged. I've waited very patiently a very long time for that to happen.

First Iran, then Syria.

No wonder Bush likes Petraeus. Petraeus is right in line with Bush's nation-building. NEWSFLASH: Iraq and Iran, and any other Muslim country you can name, are NEVER going to be democratic! We can't make the whole world conform with our sense of democracy. It's just not going to happen.
