The gay magazine The Advocate sat down with Barack Obama to explore his views on a number of issues. Read the interview here. Below is an interesting segment where he talks about what hell try to get done as President:
Question: If you were elected, what do you plan to do for the LGBT community -- what can you reasonably get done?
Obama: I reasonably can see dont ask, dont tell eliminated. I think that I can help usher through an Employment Non-Discrimination Act and sign it into law.
Question: You think its transgender-inclusive?
Obama: I think thats going to be tough, and Ive said this before. I have been clear about my interest in including gender identity in legislation, but Ive also been honest with the groups that Ive met with that it is a heavy lift through Congress. Weve got some Democrats who are willing to vote for a non-inclusive bill but we lose them on an inclusive bill, and we just may not be able to generate the votes. I dont know. And obviously, my goal would be to get the strongest possible bill -- thats what Ill be working for.
The third thing I believe I can get done is in dealing with federal employees, making sure that their benefits, that their ability to transfer health or pension benefits the same way that opposite-sex couples do, is something that Im interested in making happen and I think can be done with some opposition, some turbulence, but I think we can get that done.
And finally, an area that Im very interested in is making sure that federal benefits are available to same-sex couples who have a civil union. I think as more states sign civil union bills into law the federal government should be helping to usher in a time when theres full equality in terms of what that means for federal benefits.
Question: I assume youre talking about the Defense of Marriage Act.
Obama: Absolutely, and I for a very long time have been interested in repeal of DOMA.
Obama has taken some flack the gay press because he hasnt given them the access they think he should. Itll be interesting to watch how Obama handles all of this if hes the nominee. Hell need to track towards the middle to win but McCain and the Republican National Committee will try and paint him as the most liberal guy out there. In addition, Obama has an appeal to some Evangelicals but too much pro-choice, pro-gay rights talk will turn them off
along with some of the African American vote.
All things considered, wonder if osama obama is closet queer? He just needs a helping hand from Barney Frankenwhine.
This is precisely why it doesn’t matter if he converted from Islam to Christianity...he doesn’t believe in Christian principles anyway....scares hell out of me...I don’t think the BIG GUY will like it much!
Is there some other guy who's more liberal? Who is he?
Going to future job interview in San Francisco:
1) How fast can you type?
2) Do you know XP?
3) How big are you?
4) You like sauna's don't you?
5) Etc.
Larry Sinclair will be Obama’s VP!
Ummmm...he IS the most liberal guy out there. That is documented in his senate record and his racial views and affiliations. If elected, he would likely be the most radical president ever to hold office.
It will be interesting to see how the press tries to paint this guy as some kind of “moderate”, compared to McCain. While I am use to press contortions, this stuff will be amazing.
Obama is stepping into it with both feet. First he is pro-killing born babies now he is against the defense of marriage act. As bad as McCain is, Obama can’t win taking the extreme positions.
Forget about President. Obama would make a great Rear Admiral.
There’s no reason to have any single-sex barracks, etc. in the military once openly gay people are allowed yto serve.
The rationale for both is, in part, that people generally don’t want to be undressing in front of people who might be sexually interested in them.
I know homosexuals say “don’t think a gay guy will be going after every other guy.” Well, a straight man may not think every woman is attractive either. But I doubt that most women would be comforted enough by that thought to give up separate locker rooms, etc.
But in this matter i generally defer to people who are in the military. I know facilities are somewhat more “co-ed” than they used to be.
btt
I didn’t know Kurt Cobain had a side that WASN’T dark! :)
How special.
1) Repeal DOMA
2) Make sure partial birth abortion is available on demand
3) Take all handguns away
TRIFECTA!!
;^)
Who knew Kurt Cobain had a light side?
What’s next? “Pedophile Monthly”? “Hiney Boy”?
