Not always. People in the process of making a really big mistake don't *know* they are making a mistake. If they did, they wouldn't be making it. The punishment they get may keep someone else from making the identical mistake, but only for a while.

Reminds me of an Air Force story. Air Force transport plane lands in Iceland. The pump to empty their bathroom holding tank is busted. Some airman has to empty the tank by scooping it out into a bucket and carrying it out of the plane. The airplane commander thinks the airman is moving to slow and threatens to bring death and destruction down upon him unless he speeds up. His reply, "I'm assigned to Iceland and my job is moving shit around by hand. Just what can you do to make my life any worse?"
