MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The distillers of Sweden's Absolut vodka have withdrawn an advertisement run in Mexico that angered many U.S. citizens by idealizing an early 19th century map showing chunks of the United States as Mexican.

The billboard ad has the slogan "In an Absolut World" slapped over a pre-1848 map showing California, Arizona and other U.S. states as Mexican territory. Those states were carved out of what had been Mexican lands until that year.

Although it was not shown in the United States, U.S. media outlets picked up on the ad, and after a barrage of complaints, Absolut's maker said on Sunday the ad campaign would cease.

Too bad the reporter gave out bum info. Absolut is now owned by a French owned company, not a Swedish one.

Will Absolut be putting up a billboard to replace the last one saying “we are sorry we offended the Estados Unidos customer base”?

Or just pretending that the whole affair has been surpassed by a new ad campaign?

If the Mexicans want their old territory back they can have it. Provided they don’t mind a few nukes stuffed into Mexico City. Considering the mess that city is a few ICBMs would probably be an improvement.

"In no way was this meant to offend or disparage, nor does it advocate an altering of borders, nor does it lend support to any anti-American sentiment, nor does it reflect immigration issues," a spokeswoman wrote on Absolut's Web site.

She wrote, because there's no way she could have said that with a straight face.

Where is the ad agency from and who are their other clients?

The ad agency is equal to blame.

Timing is everything. They were a 160 years late or maybe 20 years early.

OK. I didn’t see it. Must be something wrong with my eyes (or I’m bored with the subject, since it is about a week old.)

If the Mexicans want their old territory back they can have it. Provided they don’t mind a few nukes stuffed into Mexico City. Considering the mess that city is a few ICBMs would probably be an improvement.

Per David Saville Muzzey, Ph.D. in "The Mexican War": "By the treaty concluded at Guadalupe-Hidalgo, February 2, 1848, Mexico was required to cede California and New Mexico to the United States and to recognize the Rio Grande as the southern and western boundary of Texas. In return, the United States paid Mexico $15,000,000 cash and assumed some $3,250,000 more in claims of American citizens on the Mexican government."

If they want California back, they need to pay interest on top of the current inflated value of that 1848 $18million purchase. We bought it fair and square (even though we conquered them after attacking us). Texas wasn't theirs at all. We should have annexed all of Mexico.

Also per David Saville Muzzey, Ph.D.: "But Mexico had insulted our flag, plundered our commerce, imprisoned our citizens, lied to our representatives, and spurned our envoys. As early as 1837 President Jackson said that Mexico's offenses "would justify in the eyes of all nations immediate war."" So what's changed since then?

Well, there’s the whole Spanish, Mestizo, Indian thing within Mexico that needs to be straightened out first.

From the article: Defending the campaign last week, Absolut maker Vin & Spirit said the ad was created "with a Mexican sensibility" and was not meant for the U.S. market.

The why was its banner "IN AN ABSOLUT WORLD" in English and not Spanish?
