Howell Raines says Bill Clinton playing race card
Politico ^ | April 9, 2008 | Jonathan Martin

Howell Raines said tonight that Bill Clinton has engaged in a subtle race-baiting campaign against Barack Obama.

"He has sought to, in a low key way, remind people, 'Hey, this guy is black,'" Raines said of Clinton during a panel discussion at a journalism awards banquet sponsored by The Week magazine.

As editorial page editor of the New York Times in the 90s, Raines frequently penned scathing attacks on the former president.

But since resigning as the paper's top editor in 2003 amid the Jayson Blair scandal, he has kept a low profile, living in relative seclusion in Pennsylvania.

Tonight, though, speaking before a room full of Washington reporters and politicos, Raines picked up where he left off last decade.

"Absolute fatigue with Bill Clinton is [Hillary's] biggest liability right now," he declared.

Sure, I remember all those blistering editorials in the Times condemning Clinton corruption, attacking Hillarycare, calling for a Whitewater special counsel, supporting impeachment, attacking the pardon of Puerto Rican terrorists, the sellout to China, the interventions in Haiti and the Balkans undertaken without Congressional authorization. Just like I remember the Times' endorsement of Bush in '92 and Dole in '96. These all occurred in the alternative universe this writer is living in.

WTF? I must have missed all those op-eds!

"Absolute fatigue with Bill Clinton is [Hillary's] biggest liability right now," he declared.

I think there's some Hillary Fatigue involved there too.

In all seriousness, I knew this was coming.

Obama is getting ready for McCain.

His whole campaign is going to be about race.

He is framing the “argument” that to even ‘bring up’ his racial makeup will be tantamount to racism!

This will also be framed to include his Muslim roots, his ties to Africa, and other various stuff.

Mark my words.

I'm sure Howell did write scathing attacks on Clinton - for not raising taxes higher, for not selling more national security secrets to the Chinese, for not pardoning more unrepentant terrorists and pedophiles, and, for letting the Republicans force him into signing a first step in beneficial welfare reform.

Howell Raines is symbolic of the media in general not bringing up facts until late in the game, only after burying the truth didn't work.

I all seriousness, I think what he means is scathing attacks — for not being liberal enough for commie Raines tastes. Signing NAFTA, welfare reform, not inviting Castro to dinner, failing to jail corporate executives (not named Raines), etc.

But... I thought Bill Clinton was America’s first black President?!?

So, as I understand it, the liberals labeled the white guy as a black guy, but now he’s white again, and they labeled the black guy as being half-white, then not black enough, but now, thanks to his racist pastor, he is back to being black.

Isn’t “diversity” great!

O.K.; so I guess that means that if Obama gets the nomination then Black Americans will vote overwhelmingly for the Democratic Ticket in November; huh? Wow! That could hurt the GOP. /sarc

What it “means” is that Obama would be protected by a kind of “PC armor” that would preclude many from openly asking the hard questions.

The “typical” guilty whites, and most blacks, are going to vote for him anyway.

What we want is for the swing voter to realize what sort of person Obama really is... and the sort of things — such as, black liberation theology — his administration would covertly, if not overtly, support.
