Will be installing an update tonight that fixes a number of issues. The version that will be installed is currently available on the beta site.
Changes
One last feature I am working to return is the slave windows preference. Will have that working before the new software is installed.
Yes.
I’m in Opera now. So I don’t have the steps for IE7 memorized.
But go into tools, internet options . . . down at the bottom of that resulting menu window it lists fonts and I think colors or some such. You can choose the font you want as well as choose it to override whatever the net offers to always use the font you choose vs what the webpages give you.
Some fonts are handled better than others. You might have to experiment. I think you can choose font size, too. That’s where the problem comes in. Given that my screen is two arms’ length from my head sitting in my Laz-Y-Boy, I use larger font sizes. Sometimes they run off the edge and one has to scroll sideways.
Opera overcomes that. As did Safari when it was working. IE7 is a pain on that score.
You can use Ctrl+ to increase font size in most browsers and Ctrl- to decrease font size—kind of in a brute force way.
In Opera, one can use zoom and set it to fit to screen—prevents it from running off the edge. There’s a link up thread to download Opera free. Seems to be a good browser.
Let me know if you have trouble.
This is a teaching day so I may not get back to you right away but should within 24 hours.
Blessings,
Isn't that distracting?
For me it ruins the easy flow of reading a thread, but I get around it by just passing right by it and go to the next post. So it is no problem
There is another poster that has about 3 lines in blue font color at the bottom of every one of his posts, which is distracting also.
What ever it says (I forget, it's been so long since I read it), I think several hundred times posting it is enough!
But like the clever little box, I just pass it by.
Once in a while I read each of them, and realize I am not missing anything.
I think the advantage to the posters that do this is that they can scroll real fast and see which posts are theirs so they can marvel at their profundity easilyier.
Thanks for the opportunity to comment about these little flies in the ointment, I don't want to post to either one of them and have to be put in a box, or get the blues!
: >)
Thanks, Quix...all this computer lingo is so foreign to me...browsers, beta, Safari, etc. I have no idea what is going on and if I have to do something to get with the new site. :( I imagine there are other FReepers who are in the same boat. All I know is that the current Forum page really bothers my eyes—I just wish it could be like before. Thanks for your suggestions...I’ll give it a whirl.
Those are great suggestions (not that I’m in the position to implement them of course!).
Also, I agree with the posters who do not like the current large font/display of articles. I tried looking at preferences to change it but could not find a way to do it. The font is fine once you click on and open an article, though, as it is in the sidebar.
I like the tabs and also to be able to choose text.Makes it easier:)Thanks John
Please undo this change.
I'd prefer you to undo all recent changes, but at least undo the bigger font.
Thanks for all your work, John.
Just an FYI...I have “Headers Only” selected in My Preferences, but I’m getting “Message Bodies” showing up on News/Activism. I tried resetting in My Preferences, and “Headers Only” is highlighted.
Thanks again.
Production is just another phase of testing.
Please let me know if you need further help.
I understand that change is jangling to a number of folks. I don’t like some changes. But I love John’s constant improvements.
And I love options.
Thankfully, in terms of fonts and colors etc. most things on the net with most browsers are giving more control and options to the user. So, you should be able to end up with fonts, font sizes and colors you prefer regardless of what John does.
In terms of Safari—it’s Apple’s new browser. You can download it for free from Apple’s site. The link is upthread. Clicking on the link and following the instructions should work. Same for Opera. If you have a recent computer say in the last 2-3 years—you should have enough space to load more software. Safari takes up less resources than Microslop’s IE7 any day.
I need to grade some papers. Blessings,
In IE7
Go into tools; Internet Options.
At the bottom of that menued window should be fonts etc. You can select the font and font size and override the web’s givens to use your choices on all web pages.
Thank you, KJC! I thought I was the only one. The comments section is too big—it’s leaps out at you and you can barely read the title, although it is the same size, but in blue. John, can you just make the comments font a tad smaller and increase the title size? I don’t want to stay away from FR and not hunt for news stories...but today it’s too hard to read so I’m just hanging around inside threads. ;)
I don’t know why Safari is not working for you.
I downloaded the latest version for my Mac OS 10.3.9 and it’s loading the page just fine.
In fact, the year “1901” is no longer showing up. I’m getting the correct date and time now. It’s good to be back in the present!
As a graphics guy, John, I’m wondering if you could change the sidebar to Helvetica, or Arial? The Times font on both the article side and the sidebar is really running everything together for me.
That said, thanks for all your hard work!
Looks good. Thanks for fixing the default on ‘forum’.
Sorry.
No. You are changing settings in your browser. Do you use Explorer 7 from Microsoft?
At the top of the screen—click on tools. Down at the bottom of that listing is INTERNET OPTIONS. Click on that.
Up will come a little window with more choices. At the bottom of that list of choices will be an item listing FONTS
Click on that. A little window will open for you to select a font and font size for Explorer to use with all webpages you view—there may be another little place you have to click to say that you want all web pages to be according to your settings. I’m not using Explorer now and don’t have time before tonight to open it and check for you. Perhaps others can walk you through it. But if you just PATIENTLY PERSIST, I’m sure you can figure it out with the above partial instructions.
I don’t know either. It’s not working on any webpage.
I do a registry clean daily etc. Maybe I need to run System Mechanics. Sigh.
Maybe Adalert removed something needed. Who knows.
Is there any chance of modifying the Latest Posts screen so to eliminate the blank line between the headline and the time/date line, and then adding a blank line between the who posted to who line and the next headline? That way it would be easier to visually group the headline, time/date, and posting lines together, with a blank line separating each of the different postings listed. The way it appears now, the time/date and posters lines appear to go with the headline below them, instead of the headline above them. An example of what I'm talking about is below.
Yup, it’s all about LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME, the problem for them is the content is without value and a waste of time.
I did change it to different fonts like you suggested and it’s still very hard on the eyes. It’s the size difference between title (too small), comments (huge), response and view numbers (teeny and hard to find)...I just liked it the way it was. But thanks for your assistance!
