The Atlantic ^ | 4/7/08 | Matt Yglesias/Ross Douthat

Posted on 04/07/2008 12:50:59 PM PDT by lonewacko_dot_com

Both Matt Yglesias and Ross Douthat of The Atlantic have weighed in on the Absolut ad, and both fail to understand the underlying issue. If you'd like to do something about the wider issue, please leave comments at their pages designed to discredit them. Their readers aren't going to come here, you need to leave the comments there.

Well I was an Absolute martini man. Now I’ll buy Tico (ironic?) for the house and consider Sky at the bar. I never really liked Grey Goose but now that the French are OK again I’ll give it a go. Gave up Miller lite recently too due the San Fran last supper ad.

So what’s the best alternative for Absolute Freepers?

Well Matt Glassyass and Ross Asshat, I say we just go ahead and send in troops to continue the takeover of Mehico. We, and they, will be better off.

What can you say? Since a large number, an overwhelming majority in fact, of Mexicans think that the “yanquis” stole all their best and most prosperous provinces (never mind that the prosperity only appeared AFTER the “yanquis” took over), obviously, they should be ceded back to Mexico.

Both Texas and California had at one time or another been provinces that had declared their independence from Mexico, but this flies in the face of a mythical unity of all rule extended from the King of Spain.

Oh, yeah, they would want Florida back, too.

Unfortunately they own Stolichnaya as well so I would suggest, Titos(USA), Kettle One, or Belveder. Oh that Belvedere from the freezer poored over ice with a lemon twist is next to godliness.

I don’t get all these super-expensive vodkas. Especially if you mix it.

I can't say I find it all that offensive even now. And as a fan of counterfactual histories and peculiar maps, I think it's too bad that Absolut is apologizing instead of kicking off a series, each targeted to a particular country's most implausible irredentist fantasies. For the Francophone Canadian market, you could have had Absolut Quebec, showing a vast "Republique de Nouvelle France" extending south to the Caribbean while Les Etats-Unis clings to the eastern seaboard. Then of course there would be the ad in the British tabloids depicting the United Kingdom of Great Britain and North America (governed, one would hope, by the House of Stuart); the Parisian billboard showing the French Empire sprawling to its Napoleonic boundaries; the two-page spread in the Athens papers showing a Greece with the boundaries of Justinian's Byzantium; and the micro-targeted, Venice-only campaign depicting La Serenissima restored to its former glory. Meanwhile, the campaigns for the Muslim world could be outsourced to the advertising firm of Bin Laden and Zawihiri - I hear they have some ideas on that front.

... like I said, I love to see the ads they're running in Germany ...

Seriously, though, this is a stupid idea, and it indicates the stupidity of both the ad industry and some contemporary pundits.

They are morons.

Texas was about Mexican citizens from Tejas declaring independence like Mexico did from Spain less than 30 years before. In 1840 the governors of the states of Coahuilla, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas decided to throw their own independence party and formed The Republic of the Rio Grande. It lasted less than a year, until the Mexican government purchased the governor of Coahuilla.

I got something you might like.

It’s called Shakers Vodka. Entirely produced in Minnesota. It uses wheat instead of potatoes.

Visit this web site:

http://www.shakersvodka.com

Don’t let the Minnesota-made label scare you. It’s considered to be a premium brand.
