NCAA Says No to Hooters at Final Four

ATLANTA, April 4, 2008 /PRNewswire/ -- Today Hooters of America announced that the NCAA has pulled a full page ad promoting the popular restaurant chain and featuring well known College Basketball Analyst Dick Vitale from the Final Four Official Tournament Program. Word of the ad removal reached Hooters Marketing Department late on Thursday when the ad agency that had placed the ad on behalf of Hooters received an e-mail from a representative of National Events Publications, which produces and sells program ads for the NCAA. The ad in question is a Full Page 4 Color image promoting Hooters 25th Anniversary Celebration and features Dick Vitale and Sara Hoots, an appropriately named Hooters Girl, who happens to work for Hooters at a restaurant in Selma, Texas, a suburb of San Antonio where the Final Four is being played.

"My understanding is the NCAA had stated they would only consider the ad if we removed the image of a Hooters Girl, which is absurd. That would be like telling General Motors you can advertise but don't show a picture of a car," stated Mike McNeil the Vice President of Marketing for Hooters of America. "Sara is a beautiful, intelligent and hard working employee, and we would never consider removing her image from the ad. I am concerned by this last minute and seemingly arbitrary treatment. The basketball tournament is an important time for our business, and the fact that certain competitors of ours are allowed to advertise and we are not puts us at a competitive disadvantage," continued McNeil.

The NCAA is located in Indianapolis Indiana. How hypocritical is that?

Myles Brand is a total idiot, and I apologize in advance if I offended any idiots out there.

No, not wrong. Your point is different than mine. I don’t argue that there are huge similarities in many ways, but the NCAA is a representative of and is much more geared to the colleges and their families, prospective students, etc. They have a different reputation to be concerned about, and Hooters isn’t part of it.

Right. Going after colleges with un-PC mascots takes a huge chunk of the NCAA's time. I'm surprised they have any time left over at all after threatening colleges (i.e. FSU) to go after hooters.

Last years’ Florida team would have neutralized Memphis’ offense with Noah and Horford. That’s how we won two years in a row, by taking away from teams what they like to do and enforce our will.

On the other hand, I think Kansas would have matched up much better with Florida, mainly based on them beating UF last year in the Vegas tournament, and with the physicality.

Get ready to hear a lot of “Rock...Chalk...Jayhawk...KU” tonight. And yes, I am rooting for Kansas, because I am happy to see Bill Self finally get the shadow of Roy Williams away from him.

Self is headed back to OSU.

Looks to me like some team from the SEC could have made it further in the tournament.

GO TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!

You can bet KU will pony up whatever it takes to keep Self in Lawrence.

NCAA to Hooters: We won’t accept your money. We’d rather give you more publicity than you ever dreamed of for free.

KU doesn’t have a T. Boone Pickens.

But Self could never get the kind of recruits at OSU that he can get at Kansas.
