First up, made a change to the My Comments (aka Pings aka "New Comments to You") page. You can now clear your comments page by using the new "Clear Pings" link. This is the only way to remove the "New Comments to You" indicator. (You can still view all past comments to you via "View All")
Next up on the menu: I've been upgrading the system software on all our servers. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way the spell checker broke and the new version of that software depends on software that I haven't yet been able to upgrade (because that software depends on a kernel feature that isn't available using the ancient kernel I have installed.) What this all means is that I will be taking a drive up to San Jose in the very near future (Monday night) to perform delicate surgery with a very large hammer. Once that is done, the spell checker will work.
I'm also aware that the time zone preference is not working, and I believe that problem may also be fixed by the same large hammer that will fix the spell checker (it's a very big hammer.)
So in summary, clear your pings, don't make any spelling mistakes until Tuesday and kick back and enjoy the California sun.
Me, too. As much as I appreciate the hard work JimRob and his progeny do for this site, I gotta say, I like the way it was better. It was simple, very functional, and easy to use. This version is not nearly as easy to use.
You’ll want to read this to understand the changes you will see.
S.W.A.K.
For those who are spelling challenged firefox has built in spell checker that works much like MS word.
... (thinks... where’s that very large hammer...)
Smack dat Dell upside da head!

Best of luck. Enjoy your drive through the Valley. I’m just a couple hours north of you and would offer to help but I am an unregistered hammer all by myself when it comes to computers. Thanks for all you do.
If I read this correctly, I just inadvertently erased comments I meant to go back to :(
Click “View All” you’ll get them back.
That’ll pound the Penguin straight but maybe not the FReepers.
Thanks John.
I prefer to keep my ping list so now I can expect to always see that I have new pings? My “new posts to you” will now perennially show that I have unread posts. Not good. Sometimes it’s best to leave good enough alone.
Don’t worry about the spell checker:
I cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg. The phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid, aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it dseno’t mtaetr in waht oerdr the ltteres in a wrod are, the olny iproamtnt tihng is taht the frsit and lsat ltteer be in the rghit pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can sitll raed it whotuit a pboerlm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. Azanmig huh? yaeh and I awlyas tghuhot slpeling was ipmorantt!
Forgive me, but from a usability standpoint, that strikes me as a mistake. Previously this "clear pings" function would happen just by clicking "new comments to you," correct?Making manual what was automatic seems to me to be a step backwards.
I second that point, but add that there would seem to be no reason why the manual functionality couldn't coexist with the automatic: if I want to clear pings manually, I can; if I forget to do it, the system does it for me.
And I'll reiterate my earlier lament in Post #27 that we're no longer given information about the numerical position of a comment within its entire thread.
They’re still in the “View All” area even when they’re cleared.
For me, I use this as sort of a to-do list. The indicator stays lit reminding me that I haven’t decided (or haven’t had the time) to respond to something. With the old behavior my indicator clears when I view the ping, then I get busy, get distracted, and forget all about writing a response. Maybe it’s just me, but this new behavior provides a better work flow.
Update ping!
I sent you a freepmail about this, but decided to put it here too since others may notice it too

Is something messing up in my freepmail or is this something you are working on?
This is not going to be very convenient for me in freepmailing prayer requests because I have to forward several and if the subject line doesnt fill in, I will be getting replies that I have no idea who they go to.
Is there any way to make the subject line fill in again like it did...and the name it came from in the reply to also? Sorry to be a bother...I just do lots of work in freepmail with the prayer warriors, and I dont want to mess up the prayer replies.
” Maybe its just me “
Go with that thought.... ;~)
