Free Republic Update: My Comments (Pings), System Upgrade and Spelling and Time Zone Breakage

Posted on 04/07/2008 3:18:37 AM PDT by John Robinson

First up, made a change to the My Comments (aka Pings aka "New Comments to You") page. You can now clear your comments page by using the new "Clear Pings" link. This is the only way to remove the "New Comments to You" indicator. (You can still view all past comments to you via "View All")

Next up on the menu: I've been upgrading the system software on all our servers. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way the spell checker broke and the new version of that software depends on software that I haven't yet been able to upgrade (because that software depends on a kernel feature that isn't available using the ancient kernel I have installed.) What this all means is that I will be taking a drive up to San Jose in the very near future (Monday night) to perform delicate surgery with a very large hammer. Once that is done, the spell checker will work.

I'm also aware that the time zone preference is not working, and I believe that problem may also be fixed by the same large hammer that will fix the spell checker (it's a very big hammer.)

So in summary, clear your pings, don't make any spelling mistakes until Tuesday and kick back and enjoy the California sun.

Update

Added "Pings Indicator" option to your preferences in case you'd prefer the old automatic clearing of the ping light.

Update #2

Was able to work around the spell checker dependency issue, you can now misspell words to your heart's content.

Here is your answer:

He’s also planning on rebuilding the mail system. The one we have now was just a quick and dirty he threw together one night and never got around to refining.

He didn’t know at the time that it would be so popular. He had to disable the by sender feature because it was killing system performance. He’s going to redesign the database and add lots more features to the mail system as he rebuilds it.

For example, he wants each user to be able to download their mail boxes so they can manage them off line and purge the older stuff from FR. He also wants to allow “party line” multiple user freepmail so three or more people can carry on a private conversation and all parties invited are sharing the same “freepmail” thread.

That by sender thingie was great. I used it before it disappeared 'cause I needed to save some smokin' hot FR mails(LOL yep) to counter balance false statements posted by some ex-FR members.

I do know a method for finding old FR mails if you want to know I'll FR mail you.

Oh and if the scenario above is not done by the next picnic, I'm bringing ants!

That would be grate!! That's exactly what I have been wanting!

LOL. Hey, I've got some kinda smokin' hot mail too (well, maybe slightly warm mail, LOL), problem is.....I don't know where the heck it is. It's buried under years of other mail. :-(

Oh, yes, please share. I'd be interested to know how you are doing that.

Have the FR Polls been removed, misplaced, or am I looking in the wrong place?

Pending clean up. Something in the code was causing the web server to spontaneously combust. But only occasionally.

Hi John, can you tell me why our “in forum” posting history has changed?

The first page has all the most recent, then next page goes way back, to the beginning of our signup dates, but no in between?

What am I doing wrong? Not sure how to navigate now.

Thanks!
