McCain Is Vocal on War, but Silent on Son’s Service
The New York Times ^ | 4/6/2008 | JODI KANTOR

One evening last July, Senator John McCain of Arizona arrived at the New Hampshire home of Erin Flanagan for sandwiches, chocolate-chip cookies and heartfelt talk about Iraq. They had met at a presidential debate, when she asked the candidates what they would do to bring home American soldiers — soldiers like her brother, who had been killed in action a few months earlier.

Mr. McCain did not bring cameras or a retinue. Instead, he brought his youngest son, James McCain, 19, then a private first class in the Marine Corps about to leave for Iraq. Father and son sat down to hear more about Ms. Flanagan’s brother Michael Cleary, a 24-year-old Army first lieutenant killed by an ambush and roadside bomb.

I’m not a huge McCain fan, but as a veteran myself I found it to be a great article. I don’t know if Jimmy Mccain possesses the necessary speaking skills, but it would be neat if he got a chance to stand in his dress blues with his Dad, and relate his experiences in Iraq. This, I would think, would offer a stark contrast to the military-hating Democrats......Ok OK, the military-disliking Democrats.

I wonder if he is ashamed of his son and his service

Why would you wonder that? The proudest parents aren't always the ones who brag the loudest.

**I wonder if he is ashamed of his son and his service**

Good grief, no. He wants him to remain anonymous. After all, it is a war. Let him serve his tour of duty and then come home.

I bet McCain is extremely proud of his son!

If anyone asked about his family, he had a sarcastic joke at the ready. When a cluster of marines asked how they could help his father’s campaign, Lance Corporal McCain pretended to call him and then passed on a message: they could carry out the contracts the senator had taken out on his rivals’ lives.

I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. Jimmy's a chip off the old block.

**No, I think he knows enough to respect their units by NOT parading them in front of the public.**

You are remembering what happened to Prince — was it Harry in England?

Excellent point.

Hang in there, Poetgal! I understood what you were saying was not in a malicious way. Boy did you get jumped on pretty quick! I hope you didn’t get too many bumps and bruises. I think people just took it the wrong way. :)

I think the problem is that there are times when words are not only insufficient but actually detrimental to communication.

For example, when the florist asked if I wanted a banner to say, "Beloved Mother" for her funeral. I replied, "No. Just, 'Mother.'" If anyone didn't know what that meant, no adjective could possibly tell them. Any adjective could only subtract from, not add to, "Mother." Just as "unique" is stronger than "very unique;" the "very" actually takes away from the full force of the word "unique."

And I think that those who understand how that applies to Senator McCain's behavior naturally are offended by any suggestion contrary to their understanding of his admirable restraint.

The word "very" in the phrase, "very unique" is simply wrong. There are no varying degrees of uniqueness, something is either unique or it is not.

"Let the boy earn his spurs"
Edward III (speaking of Edward "the black prince", Prince of Wales)

i have no use for McManiac, but he's absolutely correct in this instance.

"AND GOD BLESS HIM FOR IT"

Maybe he wants to keep his son safe in his duty. We all know what happened to Prince Harry when the Quisling press exposed his actions. Damn the NYTIMES and any other Media Monster that pursues this. Next up will be full blown pictures of the guy as love letters to Al-Quaida. Or descriptions of him as a child killing, teenager raping wedding crashing murderer.

Welcome to Free Republic, where the Perpetually Pissed will take an honest question and try to turn you into Satan himself. Please do not let it bother you and please realize that those that are so quick to go on the attack are usually hiding some sort of inadequacy. The favorite attack is either being called a leftist or a troll, just don’t pay any attention to these people.

Hey attackers, what ever happened to the benefit of doubt?

Come on Salvation, you are better than that, “Let he that is without sin cast the first stone.” The wording maybe wasn’t perfect but it was an honest question. Why do we seem so intent on eating our own?
