My understanding is that it is the official position of the LDS that polygamy is wrong. Some Mormons on this thread have held to that position. Many, who claim to not be FLDS, claim that polygamy is OK.

Thank you, metmom. That was my understanding to, but I was unsure, considering how many of them seem to be defending polygamy.

The position that the Mormons have is that polygamy is wrong because it is against the law. Not that it is a sin in they eyes of God.

They would say that it was God's will for the early Mormon Church to practice polygamy.

So they think it is wrong but they still defend it.

CC, if I am wrong, please correct me!

I tend to 'understand' it differently.

The official position of the LDS that polygamy is ILLEGAL.

THEREFORE, since they do NOT want to be LAW breakers (they brag about obeying GOD'S laws; too), they go along with this:

1 Corinthians 6:12
"Everything is permissible for me"--but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible for me"--but I will not be mastered by anything.

Oh heck!
Let's just ASK them!!

  • The standard doctrine of the Church is monogamy, as it always has been, as indicated in the Book of Mormon (Jacob chapter 2): “Wherefore, my brethren, hear me, and hearken to the word of the Lord: For there shall not any man among you have save it be one wife; and concubines he shall have none. … For if I will, saith the Lord of Hosts, raise up seed unto me, I will command my people; otherwise they shall hearken unto these things.”

In other words, the standard of the Lord’s people is monogamy unless the Lord reveals otherwise.  Latter-day Saints believe the season the Church practiced polygamy was one of these exceptions.

(Looks like they can't make up their minds even now!!)

they are in violation of the law of this Church...

 HELLO!

I'd like to SEE this 'law'!

It's no WONDER that the LDS members in these threads spout this stuff!!

At various times, the Lord has commanded His people to practice plural marriage. For example, He gave this command to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, David, and Solomon (Doctrine and Covenants 132:1).
