Social Conservatives Warn against Romney as McCain's VP

(CNSNews.com) - In a full-page letter ad that will run Saturday in an Arizona newspaper where Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) will be on the presidential campaign trail, leading social conservatives warn the GOP hopeful against picking Mitt Romney as his vice presidential running mate. 
"I know (Romney) to be a very dangerous and deceitful person," Gregg Jackson told Cybercast News Service about his reasons for helping draft and signing the open-letter style ad.
"He's the only one to establish abortion on demand for $50 as part of his very own socialist health care plan," Jackson said, referring to the plan put into place in Massachusetts when Romney was governor of the state.
Jackson, author of "Conservative Comebacks to Liberal Lies" and a talk show host on WRKO in Boston, said Romney is the most liberal of all the presidential candidates, including Democrats Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.
Conservative activist Paul Weyrich, who supported Romney when he was in the presidential race, also signed the letter.
"We were very grateful when (Weyrich) came to see the light," Peter LaBarbera, founder of Republicans for Family Values and president of Americans for Truth, told Cybercast News Service.
LaBarbera and Jackson joined 24 others in signing the letter, a group that also included J. Matt Barber of Concerned Women for America and William J. Murray of the Religious Freedom Coalition.
LaBarbera said social conservatives want McCain to nominate "somebody that has solid pro-family and pro-life credentials."
Jackson said he had no doubts about the significance of McCain's VP choice.
"(McCain) will not win unless he can effectively mobilize and energize the GOP base, euphemistically called 'value voters' or Evangelical Christians," Jackson said. "There are 40 million of us, and I say, 'Hey Pal, if you want my vote, you'd better pick an authentically conservative running mate.'
"We don't want Hillary Clinton dressed up in a Reagan suit," he added.

I guess one can hope.
The only person I ever heard of in that ad is Paul Weyrich. I appreciate these people and their work, but they certainly aren’t big name conservatives.
I am a social conservative who voted for and supported Mitt. I liked Fred or Mitt, and when Fred faded, I went to Mitt.
I really think it is pitiful that some conservatives can’t believe Mitt had a change of heart. Their refusal to listen to his story and their refusal to listen to even the pro-choice people who ripped Mitt after he became governor of Massachusetts is astounding to me.
Oh well, whatever.
IMO, McCain has to choose someone more conservative than him. Mitt fits that bill, but whoever he chooses, he has to be from the right.
That could fit Obama too.
We here in Ohio never got to vote for Mitt or anyone else for that matter since McCain was already the shoe in.
I’d say Mitt would fair very well here in Ohio which has been a pretty important state in the last few Presidential elections...
Add in Thompson and Huckabee for the title of the real conservative in GOP primaries that are open to donkeys and independents, and guess who screwed themselves?

IMHO, I don't think that there were that many McCain Apologists on this forum. Looking at Operation Chaos in the continuing donkey primary contest, we can expect more of the same idiocy unless the GOP restricts its primaries to only registered well in advance GOP voters, like they do in NY. I had to register by early October 2007 to vote in the 2008 NY GOP primary.

As I wrote back in January, “According to a Fox News exit poll, 32% of the Michigan Republican primary voters identified themselves as independents or Democrats. Another Fox exit poll showed 20% of the South Carolina Republican primary voters said they were either Democrats or independents. In Michigan, Gov. Romney won with 39%, Sen. McCain was second at 30% and Gov. Huckabee third at 16%. In South Carolina, John McCain won with 33% of the vote, Mike Huckabee had 30% and Fred Thompson had 16%. Given those margins, it’s pretty clear that the Dems and independents controlled the result in both states.”In New Hampshire, the results were the same. According to Fox News exit polls, 39% of New Hampshire’s independents were voting GOP ballots. Sen. McCain won by about 5.5% over Gov. Romney in New Hampshire. Again, the independents apparently controlled the results.
By allowing cross-over voting, the Republican Party is enabling liberals to choose its nominee. Just as conservatives demand our borders be secure against illegal aliens, conservatives insist that Republicans -- and only Republicans -- choose the Republican nominee for president.
If the GOP doesn't close the primaries and caucuses, to whatever extent that the GOP uses the latter in its nomination process, expect more of the same in 2012.

The SoCon’s might think Romney is a closet lib, but it’s what McCain thinks that counts, and I bet he thinks Romney is way too CONSERVATIVE for the Veep pick. That Chistie Todd Whitman rumor the other day sounded more like McCain’s idea of a pick to me. Or maybe McChurian will wait until Hillary becomes free. He’s gonna spend ALL his time running for her voters anyway, so why not just ask her to be Veep.
We’re so screwed.

IMHO, Mitt Romney is the wrong choice for McCain’s VP. He has major credibility problems, especially with the conservatives McCain needs to win the election.

Absolutely. I would have a VERY difficult time voting for the ticket if Romney were placed on it.
In my opinion, we need a very strong Southern governor.......striaght laced and very, very conservative.
