VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) - Authorities say a transient climbing over a chain link fence in Vancouver choked to death when he got tangled in the straps of his beer-filled backpack.
Police say 51-year-old James Francis Henry had been drinking beer Tuesday night while walking with his girlfriend, 38-year-old Kelli Jo Barkley. They were returning to their homeless encampment from their roadside panhandling site.
Barkley says he fell while trying to scale a 6-foot chain link fence, got his neck caught in the chest strap of his backpack and said, "Help me! Help me!"
By the time she got a nearby resident to call 911 and emergency crews arrived, Henry was unconscious and could not be revived.
Police said his backpack contained about a dozen 40-ounce bottles of beer.

Yes, the guy was stupid, but he didn’t deserve to die. I’ll high five when the murdering swine Castro goes. Not for this guy. This was a shame.

We ran into one at Wendy’s once. He said he was hungry and hadn’t eaten in days. We offered to buy him some food but he wanted the money. When we insisted he just waved his hand at us and went after the next person who came up.

One should obviously never drive and drink , and Jump fences and drink. I'll bet the can didn't have a warning label. Lawsuit time?

I work hard for my beer money. Why should they get free beer and get to spend all day drinking it on my dime while I'm at work not drinking it? Makes no sense to me. That's like hiring someone to drink my beer for me while I go thirsty.

I bet those people who gave the panhandling couple (probably with signs saying they were hungry) their cash wondered what they did with it. Thats the reason why I dont give to them. That couple was on a liquid diet. (groan)

A Senate committee today will open hearings on why backpack manufacturers contruct their products in such a way as to promote the killing of transients who load them with bottles of beer. Next week beer producers will be called before the committe to answer ...............................................................................................................................................

30 pounds. Weighs a bit less than two bowling balls. That's just the beer weight. With the glass it's probably 40-50.

That's just the beer weight. With the glass it's probably 40-50. Plus, he probably had about another 10 pounds of it in his stomach and bladder. This man was seriously loaded and overloaded.

I'll bet the can didn't have a warning label. Lawsuit time? Plus the fence maker and the backpack maker. And maybe even the shoe maker if he was wearing any. If not, the sock maker. And the 911 crew for not saving him.

Two bowling balls? Those would be the ones that talked him into the dozen 40’s heist?
Oh, ping, cricket...to yet another ale of woe.

All she had to do was get under him, put his feet on her shoulders, let him relieve the pressure on his neck and get out of the straps...she could have saved him. Poor guy
