RALEIGH, N.C. — A probation officer assigned to a teenager now charged with killing the University of North Carolina's student body president was handling 127 cases without training, state corrections officials said Wednesday.

A state investigation also found that 17-year-old Laurence Lovette never met with probation officer Chalita Thomas. The probation cases of the other suspect in the killing, Demario Atwater, were handled by 10 different officers.

"This is a dark cloud over our agency," said Robert Lee Guy, director of the state Division of Community Corrections.

Guy said no one has been fired but three senior probation and parole officials in Wake County have been reassigned.

Reassigned?? For what, so that they can totally screw up and have other people murdered? Eve Carson's family better lawyer up and go after these asshats. What complete and utter nonsense.

Prayers for Ms. Carson and her family and other victims created by this gross incompetence.

Not just Eve Carson but the Indian grad student who was murdered in his apartment in January.

Wow, so the same guy (and maybe the other same people they just don’t have evidence to charge) murdered TWO college students within a matter of a couple months.

He was arrested 9 times and constantly released. He also was getting probation instead of getting real hard time for SERIOUS offenses.

How many more just like him are still out there, with rap sheets a mile long but still out on probation?

Buddy of mine recently took a gov't job..coincidentally in NC...he had a real dud of a person working for him, and approached his supervisor to discuss beginning the firing process.

Supervisor told my friend that it "would be faster to walk to this dud's cubicle, shoot him, do the prison time, and come back to work" than to go through the firing process.

So....my friend did the same thing that happened to him...new manager came into the department, and foisted the dud off on the new sucker, er, manager.

Your Tax Dollars at work.

It is not just the two Perps that are criminal in this instance. Look at the record of the Parole Officer herself. I posted an article about this yesterday;

Affirmative Action, nepotism and endemic Gov’t corruption and incompetence at play!

There need to be consequences - I’d say especially for government workers. Lives are literally at stake.

This is what happens when you have a selfish, ignorant, incompetent society that just doesn’t care about their fellow man anymore. Total chaos. It’s only going to get worse.

Until we come up with a way to hold public officials’ feet to the fire and make them responsible for the damage they do, or those who work for them do, it's not going to change. There are thousands of people out there who have college degrees but don't have the ability to do a job they've been hired for and there's no way to get rid of them. Many of these people end up working for government, often in the justice system or in education.

Government has simply ceased to function, at virtually every level. The problem is that in the process of reaching this point they have quietly taken on more and more tasks and given themselves more and more power. And the worst part about it is that there's no one charged with keeping an eye on what's going on.

And it's not just government. I have a hard time going through a drive-thru and ordering a hamburger, fries and coke and driving away with a correct order.

The world is grinding to a halt.

This is the type of government ineptitude that makes other law enforcement agencies look bad. The probation officer that failed to meet with that killer should be looking for other employment.

I sincerely hope this story gets the national coverage it deserves. If it’s happening in NC, you know it’s happening elsewhere.

I couldn’t agree more with your post. In government, the foxes are watching the hen house - and/or - the patients are running the asylum.

But, this type of incompetence and lack of caring is found virtually everywhere in today’s society. Imho, the decay is happening from within and it’s not pretty. Whether you look at Wall Street, Gov. Spitzer and Patterson, the Clinton’s, hollywood, public schools, etc., it’s everywhere - and yes, even the drivethru.

I read recently that there are several major cities in the US where the rate of children graduating from high school is in the 30 - 38% range. So, 70% of these kids will do what when they graduate? There are whole generations of people who are basically unemployable, except for the most basic of jobs which pay nothing and create another cycle of poverty and ignorance.

Obviously, there is no “reward” for excellence. Seems to me the communists tried this, and it was big fat bust. People only perform, create and excell when there is a carrot in front of them.

Someone should get a picture of probation officer Chalita Thomas and put it on a CCW ad with the caption, ‘Your government is not coming to your aid’.

I know that every generation going back more than a thousand years has decried how badly things are going compared to the past, and just like me has forecast the demise of civilization as we know it, but it can’t go on forever.

Isn’t it ironic that just when education is more important than ever to being able to earn a living and support a family that it’s in its worse shape ever?
