Yeah Absolut vodka is as a big as the threat from the islamofascists.
JMO, maybe you should be putting down the rotgut vodka you seem to drink.
That's why Ford's still selling Pintos as fast as they can crank them out, right?
LOL, just kidding.
I can see you don’t work for a marketing department. There is very definitely such a thing as bad publicity - driven a Corvair lately? If they were after the effect you propose they’d have published this in the United States. This was a bonehead blunder by a marketeer who was too cute by half. It happens a lot.
Oh so you’re saying the american LEFT wing will LOVE absolut for threatening america? I don’t believe many of the american people are anti-american, even the ones who lean left still love the country for the most part and simply have a different idea about how it should be. This isn’t one of those “different ideas,” this is just a hateful threat that will piss both sides off. The potential for loss is far greater than the potential gain of a few radical reconquista.
good, I was worried for a minute! :-)
The ad isn't trying to say that - and it's a real stretch to even interpret it that way. It's a straightforward, classic appeal to Mexican machismo - "Drink Absolut and you'll be the kind of man who will win back for Mexico the lands the gringos stole from you."
It's the Mexican equivalent of Reverend Wright's message to blacks: "You are owed."
Now it's true that a vodka ad doesn't amount to much in the grand scheme of things, but I find it significant that an international company deems the message potent enough to its intended audience to make it into a slogan.
Dane, while there is “no such thing as bad publicity,” there is certainly such thing as bad advertising.
B. Ads can and do, backfire. This one has that kind of potential. Being talked about on TV and radio is not the same as being ordered in bars. If anything this is a sign that Absolut is nervous about being crushed in the market by Grey Goose/Belvedere/Chopin.
Really, Absolut just got free tons of publicity, and doing it by running an English language ad in a Spanish language magazine, which would be probably 10 times less in an equivalent English language magazine.
Brilliant I say, and sad, in that the marketeers can play you reactionaires like a violin.
If they had wanted a faster vitriolic reaction they SHOULD have run it in an english magazine where it would be seen by more americans. Getting people pissed off by threatening their country does not get you sales. You seem to think there are millions of mexicans just waiting for someone to threaten the US so they can buy their products... If so, bring it on, maybe they should follow through on the threat so we can crush their skulls.

Makes me want to take up drinking again so I can boycott the crap.
Incidently, even if there were millions of mexicans who wanted to reconquer the US, what good would it do the company to piss americans off? It won’t increase the popularity in mexico as much as it will decrease the popularity in the US...
Hehe.
Monopolowa is my brand, keep it in freezer for my martooni.
“When I lived in Berlin I could go into East Berlin and buy Stoli for .50 a liter.
Ahhh. Those were the days :)”
AS the CIA guy in Hudson Hawk said “Aahhh the Cold War those were go times, God I miss it!”.
brilliant ...
