FBI tracked King's every move

FBI wiretaps have "given us the most powerful and persuasive source of all for seeing how utterly selfless Martin Luther King was," as a civil rights leader, according to a leading civil rights scholar.

"You see him being intensely self-critical. King really and truly believed that he was there to be of service to others. This was not a man with any egomaniacal joy of being a famous person, or being a leader," said Pulitzer Prize-winning scholar David Garrow in a recent interview with CNN.

Hoping to prove the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was under the influence of Communists, the FBI kept the civil rights leader under constant surveillance.

The agency's hidden tape recorders turned up almost nothing about communism.

But they did reveal embarrassing details about King's sex life -- details the FBI was able to use against him. Video Watch how the FBI tracked King's every move »

The almost fanatical zeal with which the FBI pursued King is disclosed in tens of thousands of FBI memos from the 1960s.

The FBI paper trail spells out in detail the government agency's concerted efforts to derail King's efforts on behalf of the civil rights movement.

The FBI's interest in King intensified after the March on Washington in August 1963, when King delivered his "I have a dream speech," which many historians consider the most important speech of the 20th century. After the speech, an FBI memo called King the "most dangerous and effective Negro leader in the country."

The bureau convened a meeting of department heads to "explore how best to carry on our investigation [of King] to produce the desired results without embarrassment to the Bureau," which included "a complete analysis of the avenues of approach aimed at neutralizing King as an effective Negro leader."

'A decision in a 1977 court case brought by Bernard Lee, one of King's associates, sealed the transcripts from those wiretaps until 2027. But King's associates confirm there were at least two cases in which FBI surveillance caught King in compromising circumstances.'

Gotta wonder if MLK was gay. Btw, nice job Kennedy and the Fed for spying on the commons.

It’ll be role reversal if Nobama or Hitlery gets elected.

Anyone old enough to remember all this “MLK” stuff?
My recollection is references to him in the media and around the water cooler were not as glowing as they are today.
Without being cruel (which this will sound) it appears if you are assassinated your memory is enhanced (unless you are a conservative or Republican).

Author Taylor Branch got ahold of an FBI document relating to King’s lawyer being wiretapped.

It revealed that in August 1963 just before the “I Have A Dream” speech King was meeting with “mistresses” while he was in New York. So I don’t think he was gay.

There are reliable reports that a LOT of such evidence exists deep within the bowels of the FIBbers and that King was a raging HETERO. I’d guess it’s been destroyed by now, however.

And isn’t it interesting how the black community has largely ignored the fact that nearly all of that snooping went on under DIMOCRAT administrations? Plantation mentality? Probably.

‘When King learned he would be the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, the FBI decided to take its harassment of King one step further, sending him an insulting and threatening note anonymously. A draft was found in the FBI files years later. In it the FBI wrote, “You are a colossal fraud and an evil, vicious one at that.” The letter went on to say, “The American public ... will know you for what you are — an evil, abnormal beast,” and “Satan could not do more.”’

‘abnormal’ is more in line with being gay. Also, sealing records for having a mistress is kinda bland. I could see doing it if he was other.

They made a movie about Thomas Jefferson and his sex with the slave.

Will there be a movie about the sex life of Martin Luther King?

Maybe to enhance Bill Clinton’s image, I guess, but I seriously doubt it.

Why are we getting such CNN attention to King’s sex life anyway which relatively few people are aware of?

King is sometimes compared to Obama.

A political motive?

And isn't it interesting how they conveniently leave out the fact that it was Saint Bobby Kennedy who was the Attorney General of the United States at that time and who authorized the FBI to wiretap Dr. King.

It could also have been a white woman. That would have fired up the rabble in the 1960s.

_____

From what little I have read, it seems that this was done at the behest of Mr. Hoover, who, of course, is reputed to have had serious dirt on the Kennedys. Not quite as simple as you make it sound.

That was typical for the period... cold war and all. Communists usually found a welcome in the US among social dissidents, political mavericks, anti-government intellectuals with an ax to grind.... It was the basic Communist approach to de-stabilizing countries where they wanted to gain a foothold. The US and ALL free countries regularly ‘tracked’ the movements and behavior of anyone who they regarded as potentially a Communist stooge.... King looked like a prime target for Communist efforts along those lines. It is understandable that he might be interesting to people in charge of the safety of the US and of American interests. You can’t know much about US history or in particular, history of the post WWII era if you don’t comprehend THAT fact.

Eisenhower was a Republican. Kennedy was a Republican. Johnson was a Republican. It’s all the fault of the Republicans!

It’s fairly widely accepted that they had tapes of him with other women, including 3-way situations (2 girls for those keeping score). I have never heard any claim the tapes showed him to be gay.

“Eisenhower was a Republican. Kennedy was a Republican. Johnson was a Republican. It’s all the fault of the Republicans!”

That sounds like the cult voters for Hussein ObamaSamma. It is allways the fault of the republicans and GW.

Exactly and who was the Attorney General under both of these rats?

Yes, the racist brother of Killer Teddy Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, another elite racist leftie.

Today is the 40th anniversary of MLK’s last speech (”I have been to the mountaintop”). It’s also the 12th anniversary of the death of Ron Brown.
