Bill Would Require Parents To Volunteer At Schools
Newsnet 5 (WEWS Cleveland) ^ | April 2, 2008

CLEVELAND -- It's no secret that schools need volunteers in order to do more for students, but one proposed law would make it a requirement for parents to volunteer at their child's school.

Parent Darlene Boyd has been volunteering at her grandchildren's school for six years. If the state legislature passes house bill 519, she'll have a lot of company.

The bill would require all parents to volunteer 13 hours each school year, either in the lunchroom, chaperoning field trips, or wherever the district needs help.

Research shows parents involvement leads to student success, but Cleveland schools CEO Eugene Sanders said volunteerism is almost impossible to legislate.

"If there's a way to encourage it, create incentives -- that's the better way. The difficulty is what are your options to address it if it doesn't occur? Your legal options are limited in that kind of setting," said Sanders.

The bill's incentive is a $100 fine for parents who don't fulfill the requirement.

Franklin D. Roosevelt Academy Principal Sam Vawters said he can always use more parent volunteers, but he doesn't think that's the way to do it.

And Boyd agrees: "I wouldn't want anyone to be forced to come here. Either you want to be here or you don't."

According to the bill, if a parent doesn't fulfill the requirement and refuses to pay the fine, the money would be taken out of the parent's state tax refund.

An extremely offensive law that amounts to a civilian labor draft.

Fancy words for slavery. It's frightening that any legislator in this country would even consider such a law. It tells you how far down the path of socialism we've gone that legislators would feel entitled to confiscate our labor directly, instead of just taking a huge chunk of our wages like they're currently doing.

My wife taught for twnety years, she believes parents should have to attend thier kids school at least once a week to see whats going on. She believes if more parents got involved the libs would be in trouble.
She finally gave up after the administration told her she could not grade papers with a red pen anymore. They tol her the color red was deemed harsh and offensive.
She enjoys life much more now that she isn’t a babysitter and does not fight everyday with the looney administration.
I like her better too..

No shiat Sherlock. That's because it ceases to be a voluntary activity at that point. Glad we have such smart folks in charge of our public schools.

It would be almost funny if it weren’t so serious: passing a law to “volunteer” people to do work???

I thought slaves were emancipated in the US long ago.

Not so far from the truth. Read Liberal Fascism (if you haven't already) see how American liberals have wanted to micromanage every aspect of your life for the last 100 years.

LOL! Then why call them “Volunteers” at all?
Conscripts is the correct term, comrades.

It’s not that school officials aren’t smart, it’s that they are most all socialists and unAmericans.
Just pull your kid from the govt. and liberal socialist teachers union control and watch how they slam you.

If it’s required, it’s going to be involuntary service. Call them “involunteers.” Or just call them slaves.
This is similar to the popular Democrat scheme to require community service for students (or else no diploma). The liberals think we owe service to the state, as well as taxes, and like taxes the debt will rise.
Whoever sponsored this bill should be exposed. On an ant hill.

Sounds like community service for those who don’t believe in socialism.

What is the punishment for those who refuse to submit to involuntary slavery? Will they jail you or must you buy your freedom via a socialist imposed fine?

“Require” negates “volunteer”.

It would have been awfully helpful if the reporter would have bothered to get the Bill No. and the name(s) of the person(s) responsible for it. What a great piece of work by the reporter, just like this bill. I am going to the State House’s and Senate’s website to see if I can find it.

How would they be able to collect the $100 from persons like me who always owe the State money year after year? I have to write a check for $900 this year in addition to the hundreds that I’ve already paid. Why don’t we just FINE EVERYTHING?
