~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Camp Pendleton, California

Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is the major West Coast base of the United States Marine Corps and serves as its prime amphibious training base. It is located in Southern California between the cities of Oceanside and San Clemente. The base was established in 1942 to train U.S. Marines for service in World War II. By October 1944, Camp Pendleton was declared as a "permanent installation" and by 1946, it became the home of the 1st Marine Division.

This is the main road for traffic into the base. This gate has been open and manned by Marines 24 hours a day since 1942.

Major General Joseph Henry Pendleton (June 2, 1860 - February 4, 1942) was a United States Marine Corps general for whom Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is named. He was appointed to the United States Naval Academy in 1878. He graduated from the Naval Academy and was appointed a second lieutenant on 1 July 1884.

On 1 January 1908, Major Pendleton was promoted to the grade of lieutenant colonel. Lieutenant Colonel Pendleton joined the First Brigade of Marines in the Philippines for his second tour of duty there, on 4 November 1902. He performed duty as the Commanding Officer of the First Brigade and the Post Commander, and Commanding Officer of the First Brigade and the Post Commander, and Commanding Officer of the First Regiment, at Olongapo. On 23 May 1911, Lieutenant Colonel Pendleton was promoted to the grade of colonel.

From 1 October to 7 November 1921, General Pendleton was in command of the Department of the Pacific at San Francisco. Upon the establishment of the Fifth Brigade of Marines in 4 October 1921, General Pendleton was assigned to that organization as the commanding officer. In addition to these duties he was assigned the additional duty as Commanding General Department of the Pacific in the absence of General Barnett, from 13 May 1922 to 2 September 1922. Pendleton was promoted to Major General on December 10, 1923.

The base's diverse geography, spanning over 125,000 acres, plays host to year round training for Marines in addition to all other branches of the U.S. military. Amphibious and sea-to-shore training takes place at several key points along the base's 17 miles of coastline. The main base is in the Mainside Complex, at the southeastern end of the base, and the remote northern interior is an impact area.

Daytime population is around 100,000. Recruits from nearby Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego spend a month on Pendleton's Edson Range receiving field training, and after graduating from boot camp return to the base's School of Infantry for further training. Camp Pendleton remains the last major undeveloped portion of the Southern California coastline, save for a few small state parks.

The base is the home of I Marine Expeditionary Force, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Logistics Group and many tenant units, including elements of Marine Aircraft Group 39 and Marine Corps Tactical Systems Support Activity (MCTSSA).

In San Diego, California, you can visit the USS Midway Museum.

USS Midway (CVB/CVA/CV-41) was an aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, the lead ship of her class, and the first to be commissioned after the end of World War II. Active in the Vietnam War and in Operation Desert Storm, as of 2004 she is a museum ship in San Diego, California. She is the only remaining aircraft carrier of the World War II era that is not an Essex-class ship.

Midway was laid down 27 October 1943 by Newport News Shipbuilding Co., Newport News, Virginia. Her revolutionary hull design was based on what would have been the Montana class battleships and gave her superior maneuverability over all previous carriers.

And good day to you, too, Pusterfuss...((HUGS))...finally FR is back. It’s 38 now, and got into the 40s yesterday. Still could make it today. Hope you’ve had a good Tuesday so far.

LOL! Not funny at all. I’ll bet John Robinson didn’t think so either. It crashed a bit after 1am California time. He’s probably beat from working on it all night.

We have had a high bright sun today, and a lot of yesterday’s snow is gone. I declared it an NSB (non-snowblower event) and my driveway is already clear.

Well, everything is quiet today in the weather but there are storms in the forecast for Tommorow and Thursday so we're kind of getting ready for that.

BTW, regarding Chuck. He did go to the doctor yesterday for his visit.

The tests all came out OK. The doctor wants Chuck's blood pressure to be as low as possible.

The reasoning for that is becuase of his history with congestive heart failure.

Chuck did address the dizzy spells that he's been having. the doctor said that was part of the low blood pressure.

The doctor did cut his accupril in half but he made it clear he didn't want his blood pressure to go above 130 on the top.

Chuck's next visit with the doctor is set for July.

Chuck has been doing some work in the garden. He and I tried to start the roto-tiller but it wouldn't run so we'll figure out what we're going to do next.

As for Bo, we've made an appointment with the vet for his yearly rabie shots. He will get those tommorow morning.

Great hearing that Chuck is doing so well. Low BP? Hmmm...glad the doc is on top of that.

Maybe the roto-tiller is hanging on to winter. Good luck getting it started. My little snow blower never would start this winter, so I borrowed my Dad’s big one. Gonna check garage sales for a new one this summer.

I had several other “work” related jobs to get done, so I did that instead of FReeping. I wanted to check all the April Fools jokes, but FR was down.

LOL! 85! WOW....I’m dying at 70. Should be a lively meeting, what with discussions of the past seasons.
