Some mornings I wake up and, for a minute or two, I think that I must have been dreaming that there are conservatives who hate John McCain so much that, come November, they intend to stay home and let Bill Clinton’s wife or Jeremiah Wright’s surrogate nephew become president of the United States. But then I realize it’s not a dream, and that’s when the nightmare really begins.
Recently, I wrote a piece in which I stated a few of the reasons why I think McCain should be elected. I ended with a notion for a bumper-sticker: “Better an Imperfect Republican Than a Perfect Socialist”. But, still, I heard from a number of disgruntled right-wingers who vowed not to sully their principles by helping to elect a candidate they regarded as indistinguishable from Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.
I will repeat for the rest of you what I replied to these people. Granted, I don’t agree with Sen. McCain about amnesty for illegal aliens. But his position is no worse than that of the Democrats, and at least I’m confident that he’s opposed to the illegals having the right to vote in our elections. Democrats, as we all know, are for universal suffrage -- and that includes felons locked up in jails and people buried in cemeteries.
On the plus side of the ledger, McCain has never voted to increase taxes. Initially, he voted against Bush’s tax cuts, but that was because he wanted them tied to cuts in spending. However, when he lost that battle, he voted to make the tax cuts permanent. He is also leading the fight against earmarks.
This man, whom some conservatives regard as a RINO or even a closet liberal, is pro-life, pro...

I look at this way - choice is to have the engineering firm (preferably an experienced and trusted one) to look after a tear in the dyke.... and until they show up...
I chew a wad of gum to plug the leak temporarily.
Good analogy, except McCain wouldn't perform like that wad of gum. He'd perform like acid and screw the dyke up worse.
Well said.
I also find McCain unstable.
Do I respect and honor his service and the sacrifice he made? Hell, yeah.
Do I think someone who spent five years being tortured might have a screw loose? Yep.
Does McCain act like that? In spades at times.
Long term, four years of Obama or Clinton II might cause the republican party to rediscover its soul. At least republicans in congress will have the opportunity to set themselves apart from the true socialists...like McCain has never done.
Pubbies have been running away from Reagan as though the Berlin Wall was the last act in a melodrama and time to move on to farce.
They've handed us one disaster after another as a result. This year the circus was so bad, so clearly McCain's coronation, that I really don't think they deserve my continued loyalty vote.
This disgruntled right-winger agrees with your points and would add that Juanito does not DESERVE the Presidency given his behavior over the better part of the last decade.
Should he lose, and the polls show that not enough conservatives came out for him, let that serve as an example to other liberal Repukes that want to treat us like crap and then DEMAND our loyalty!
Politics of Fear, Panic, and Blindness.
Worse-case scenario Obama stuff, as above, may happen indeed -- and if it does, Americans will make DEMOCRATS pay the price. What Panic-Fear McCain Supporters fail to acknowledge is that the SAME crap could as likely come to pass under the mentally instable Liberal Democrat Republican McCain, except that REPUBLICANS would be the biggest losers, and hence the future hope for American freedom.
Stop and consider with calmnness and honesty the comparative risks of an Obama presidency as compared to a McCain presidency. When I do that, it's pretty obvious to me that McCain presents the far greater long-term risk.
No question about it, McCain is the worst candidate for President, except all the others.
Wow, you sure know how to talk calm, honest sense. Best post on the McCain Dilemma I’ve seen yet.
BTW I am going to write a check to McCain just as soon as I can save up from sending $2000 to Fred Thompson who I was hoping would get Hunter for his VP.
Turn around Pastor! You’re preaching to the choir! (Great minds think alike and all that jazz.)
Try convincing some of the McCain sycophants drooling all over this thread. I seem to be taking incoming flack (if you can call it that).
Lets keep up a good fight against McCain ...
Yep. I'm not only NOT going to vote for him (barring a miraculous VP choice), I will work to prevent his becoming president. As somebody mentioned earlier on this thread, there's zero sense in being "mesmerized" by the R behind his name. It makes him more dangerous than Democrats.
Honestly, GVnana, if the core philosophical commonalities between Obama and McCain are not obvious to you ... there's nothing anyone can say.
Blah blah blah.
This guy thinks America’s decent humans should vote for McCain just because he’s not quite as bad as the other two scumbags? That’s pathetic. I will change my mind only after McCain shows me he will not cave to the liberal scumbags on taxes, Gitmo, “waterboarding”, and the “global warming” hoax, and admits that he was wrong about stifling free political speech with his encumbent proection bill known as “McCain-Feingold”.
THEN I might vote for McCain, if I believe him.
Thank you! :^)
I am an anti democrat and McCain chosen for us by the MSM is our candidate, like it or not.
Thanks!
Really? My stars -- listen to yourself -- you are so scared you can't think straight.
In case you haven't noticed, it's been eight years since Clinton and the bloom is off the rose in the eyes of the media and Democrats in regard to him AND his wife. I'm in uber-Liberal California yet even I understand in real life on a daily basis that pretty much EVERYBODY HATES HILLARY, even Democrats!!!!! Pretty much EVERYBODY IS SICK OF THE CLINTONS, even Democrats!!!!!!!
The odds of Hillary being in the White House for eight years are slim to null. She would be elected by fraud and her support would be illusion. A house of cards WILL FALL, even if people happen to believe it's made of bricks because they're fooled by the illusion. The odds of a loathed, shrill, and divisive Hillary causing a massive exodus of naive Democrat supporters who don't want to be identified with the Democrat party, are moderately good.
McCain offers no such upside except that he would make Democrats look good. Voting for him is betting on a sure loser.
Yes. As I pointed out before the 2006 election, it was important for us to go out and vote for the real conservatives, like Rick Santorum and others whose positions were threatened. But I also pointed out that if Bush continued to screw the base, then no matter what we did, it wouldn't matter, because millions of ordinary conservatives would stay home after having been poked in the eye too often.
I personally went to the polls and voted, but as I feared, a lot of people did not.
It's the same now, yet even worse, since I don't think intelligent voters can afford to vote for McCain. He's just too bad to vote for. So the broad base of ordinary people will probably stay home again whatever anyone says, and local candidates will suffer.
I hope the more committed voters would at least go out and support their conservative politicians on the state and local level, or even send donations to good people in other states, but no question the good guys will pay the penalty for the RNC's stupidity, if we can't manage to get McCain out of the race, somehow or other.
The party thought they could make us swallow McCain by pointing to the opposition. But this time they just went too far. McCain is far, far worse than Bush or Dole. It will be suicidal if he stays in the race.
Oh, I think we easily come up with profound ethical differences in these two individuals.
