I have been saying exactly this to all who will listen. As a Christian, this concerns me deeply about Obama. This man is the second coming of Jimmy Carter but even worse.

Great article, Mr. Bauer. I know you visit us daily. Keep hammering this home!

I’ve asked this many times on his forum and never gotten an answer, but I’ll try again - why am I supposed to care about Israel? Shouldn’t we be more worried about the interests of the United States of America?

Yep, but that just means Obama will eventually win the Nobel “Push the Jews into the Sea” Peace Prize.

You're asking two different questions.

With regard to the first, why should you care about Israel, Israel is important because Israel is the US's most important ally in the Middle East, a rare outpost of democracy and modernity in a backward, anti-American and despotic region.

With regard to the second question, shouldn't you be more worried about the interests of the United States? Absolutely. And I don't think you could argue that any American politician from any party doesn't pay attention first to America's interests. Nobody's arguing that they shouldn't. It is important to note, however, that America's interests and Israel's interests often coincide. This nut Achmaedinejad, who cries "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" in the same breath, is a perfect example of that.

If you even have to ask the question, I doubt that anyone who gives you the theological and secular reasons we care about Israel would convince you. You are not in the spiritual or ideological fight, but many Americans are, and we care very much how our elected officials view Israel.

A good article on the subject of your question.

If your an absolute isolationist which I’m assuming by your screen name, then I’m not sure you’ll get it, or at least agree.

Well, the answer lies in God's word. God said, He will bless those that bless Israel and curse those who curse Israel. Since we are nation founded on Christian principles, we have a special connection to Israel. As a Christian, I believe one of the reasons that we are so blessed by God as a nation, is because we are the greatest friend that Israel has.

Outside of that, Israel, more than any other nation, understands the threat of terrorism. They are our GREATEST Allie in the WOT. Also, they are the ONLY true democracy in that region. If we do not stand with our democratic friends, who will we stand with?

Israel, home of the Jews, Jesus and his ancestry. Abraham, his ancestor (through Mary &Joseph) and father of both Ishmael (Islam) and Isaac (Jews), and christians are jewish by “adoption”.
God told Abraham in Genesis, Isaac was child of the promise, and that LAND OF ISRAEL that is described there was for his descendents forever! AND “those who bless you will I bless and those who curse you will I curse”. Americas blessings have been tied to our support of Israel...period. The day we turn away from Israel, we are cursed ...God spoke this and he changes not.

Then there’s the Internet allegation that Obama is really a “secret Muslim.”

I don't think he's a Muslim (anymore) but will he be Muslim-friendly as president?  Will he be soft on Islam?

I think he will -- definitely.

seemed delightfully uncalculated [...], Mr. Obama described the
call to prayer as "one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at
sunset."

Isn’t it possible that they’re our ally largely because we always side with them?

Just as disturbing are Obama’s statements about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which include: “Nobody has suffered more than the Palestinian people” and the clueless remark that “the Israeli government must make difficult concessions for the peace process to restart.”

Personally, I find the thought of basing our foreign policy on religious ideals to be abhorrent.

You’re probably right, but that’s true of a lot of Americans - possibly a majority. So, why should our foreign policy be based on one narrowly held view?

That may be your belief, but this is a secular government. I don’t think it’s appropriate for us to support another nation based on religion.

Lol..that is too funny. Do you really think you can change God, and tell him what to do. You really don’t know God, but I do and he could give a flip whether its a secular government or not! He is God, and he will complete his promise...We will not change God, it is only ourselves that we have ability to change.

I think you and I have such fundamentally different world views that this probably won’t be a productive conversation for anyone. Either way, I appreciate your response to my initial question.

I think you have described what most, who think he is a “secret muslim”, mean by that description. His training as a child in Indonesia, and his thinking that has been shaped at UCC over past 20 yrs. It is no mistake that he chose that church, it has made him a Senator on that journey to the White House. The theology is more inline with Islam than Christianity.
