The Disgrace of Liberalism
American Thinker ^ | March 27, 2008 | J.R. Dunn

2008 marks the end of liberalism as a governing force in the same way that 1968 marked the end of liberalism as a political doctrine.

American liberals spent the '60s seeing their programs and policies collapse one after the other. The War on Crime, the War on Poverty, civil rights legislation, Vietnam, all were either unmitigated disasters or textbook examples of the law of unintended consequences. The Democrats went into the 1968 presidential election as crippled as any political party in American history, choked with failure, bereft of ideas, and facing a general uprising from their own younger elements.

The Democrats' 1968 Chicago convention marked the end of classical liberalism. Media coverage revealed American liberals as incapable of controlling their own constituency, much less directing a country. As delegates cowered within the convention center, Movement rioters ran wild throughout the downtown area, fighting knock-down, drag-out battles with the police. Not a single liberal figure made any serious attempt to confront, control, or even communicate with the rioters. Little more than a decade after declaring itself the "American civic creed", liberalism was on the ropes.

Instead of joining the Whigs and Know-Nothings in historical oblivion, liberalism surrendered to its internal rebels, the Democratic Party's left wing, indistinguishable in beliefs and intent from any hardcore socialist party on the international scene. In 1972, they ran one of their own, George McGovern who in 1948 had served as delegate for communist front-man Henry Wallace) for the presidency.

Nonsence. Conservatism as defined as those who conserve the principals of classical liberalism are on the ropes. We only stemmed the tide during the Reagan era. People want to be taken care of by government these days. No politician runs for office without promising how they will be best at making the government solve your problems.

2008 marks the end of liberalism as a governing force

President McDole has another day to explain why Conservatism is better to voters, until the Democrat Majority Press drowns him out with their megaphone for Liberals Clinton and Obama.

“... Utilizing the old gimmicks of constituent services and favors and the new ones of planning and centralization, liberalism was able to maintain its dominance in backward and desperate areas of the country such as the Northeast and Upper Midwest.

“The claim to higher morality was more inchoate, a kind of luminous abstraction beyond the grasp of money-grubbing Republicans, clearly understandable only by liberals themselves. Liberals claimed a monopoly on compassion, decency, and social justice (as defined by themselves), posing as the sole defenders of civic virtue against a horde of backwoodsmen, racists, and religious fanatics.

“This elaborate double imposture served to keep liberalism alive for over three decades in the absence of ideas, doctrine, and serious accomplishments. But 2008 has brought the charade to an end. Events this year have exposed, once and for all, in a way that cannot be denied, elided, or spun, Democratic liberals as the party of abject incompetence and institutionalized corruption. “

Great article.

Hitlery, Spitzer, Pelosi, Paterson, McGreevey, OBama... They are really doing a great job to demonstrate the “higher moral values” of the liberals.

I have to get this to my aunt. She’ll just love it!

The Democrats' 1968 Chicago convention marked the end of classical liberalism.
Because socialistic journalists and politicians were disappointed in the failure of the etymologically deceptive term "socialism" in America, they assigned to their tyrannically-inspired nostrums the term "liberalism," which at the time, and yet still outside the US, denoted what Americans now call "conservatism. They simply stole our deservedly positive label, and ran it into the ground.

Now this present author asserts, with some considerable basis in fact, that socialism has mutated further but retains the term "liberalism." To distinguish the prior version of faux "liberalism" from the present farcical version, the author uses the term "classical liberalism" to denote, not free market "American conservatism," but a less-farcical prior version of socialism.

That is a bridge too far. An egregious choice of words.

So they are giving up on that one, huh? Now that they have cornered the market on racists, cult religious fanatics, and yahoos.

This quote from the article needs a wider audience:

"To this gallery we can add Jennifer Granholm, who assured that Michigan's current slide was as drastic and damaging as possible, Ed Rendell, Hillary's consigliere for Pennsylvania, John Murtha, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Kwame Kilpatrick, charged with perjury, obstruction of justice, and malfeasance in office. That's the Democratic Party, the bastion of American liberalism, as it stands.

Thanks for posting the article. It's an interesting read, but I have to agree with the poster who pointed out that no present politician gets elected without touting some government scheme to the voters. Otherwise, Jenny Grandmole would not have been re-elected.

I agree with you.

Aside from the fact that liberalism possesses psychological trappings and rewards that are powerfully alluring, if not addictive, we have a structural problem.

Those who depend on government largess now outnumber those who fund it by quite a margin. State, municipal, and federal employees, retirees, unions, those in education, non-profits, and corporate entities dependent upon government contracts, all vote monolithically liberal, and their numbers are growing. Even agriculture has been bought off. We have already reached a tipping point. Perhaps this year we will dodge a bullet, but only because the Dems have put up such horrible, flawed candidates. Our victory will be temporary at best.

Liberalism is a disease in epidemic fashion right now. I do not believe we can stem the tide of this evil problem.

Too many people have fallen prey the lure of easy money for nothing.

The Liberal/Democratic/Socialist/Communist Party is too firmly entrenched in the lower masses who are propagating at an alarming rate.

You want contemporary liberalism? John McCain gave a major policy address yesterday, shamelessly liberal. Cspan has the video:

View it and weep for America.

But even so, there comes a point where the producers simply cannot provide for the feeders-from-the-goobermint-trough crowd.

A revolution is brewing in this country, and I’ll bet that it is here sooner than most think and will be far bloodier than most can believe.

Worse yet, today they're resurrecting the same old ideas, putting a coat of varnish on them, then calling them "change." If you listen to Barack Obama, he doesn't have a single suggestion that doesn't sound like it comes from the Summer of Love. And Hillary Clinton's political notions were obsolete with the second publishing of the Communist Manifesto.

First, we must call the enemy what it is! Is is MARXISM!

Liberals are never satisfied with any program. They are always demanding more. Why? Answer: Because it is Marxism that is the nuclear fuel rod that drives them. ( Even if they are unaware of it.

Think of it like a train line. Individual liberal programs are merely train stops. MARXISM is the final destination!

My next concern are our government K-12 schools, colleges, and universities. The Marxists and their armies of Useful Idiots are hard at work indoctrinating the next generation of voters.

Conservatives still have a few powerful tools. One is talk radio. It is time we start pressuring the Big Three ( Rush, Sean, and OReilly) into using the word that fits: MARXISM. We, their audience, need to pressure these guys. They must start educating their readership about what it is that drives the Democratic Party and the liberals that have infected every corner of our culture.

Conservatives also have money. We could, if someone with leadership could organize it, SHUT DOWN every government K-12 school in this nation. We could, if we wanted, open private scholarship foundations that would award private vouchers to children attending private **conservative** schools. With today's technology every child could have access to a world class ( but inexpensive) **conservative** education.

If we could get our nation's kids OUT of our government school indoctrination camps, within 12 short years we could have armies of kids on campus prepared to defend classical liberalism before their Marxist college professors, and ready to stare down the communist administrators of their universities. Within 20 years these young adults would be taking over key positions in the media, arts, professions, and especially in our courts and legislatures.

Ok,,,What should conservatives **DO** about it???

I don't see sitting like a frog in a slowing warming pot of water as an effective strategy.

I offered two suggestions in post #16.

We need some conservatives with back bone to stand up and be counted (either in government service, office....and in the general population).

That so-called foriegn policy speech proves that McCain is a left-wing globalist.

He will fight the islamic terrorists in front of us while opening the door and inviting in the UN communists and Nazis through the backdoor.

McCain with his idiotic plans to fight “global warming” will push this nation into a financial collapse.

SHUT DOWN every government K-12 school in this nation.

Until we break the teachers unions there is no hope. Monopolies will always in all times and places guarantee two things higher prices and lower quality for the good or service controlled. No where is that economic law better demonstrated than our socialist public school system. Try
to explain this to the average cheer leaders mom or the quarter backs dad.
