Police: Man Dies After SEPTA Concourse Confrontation (Beaten to death at Phili Subway Station)

The incident occurred at about 2:35 p.m. before the turnstiles on the Market-Frankford Line concourse at 13th and Market streets, police said.

One adult male was taken to Jefferson University Hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Police said homicide investigators have been summoned to the scene.

A transit police sergeant was on patrol on the eastbound platform at the time of the incident.

"While on patrol, he notices across the way, on the westbound concourse, a white male adult, about 30-years-old, and he's being confronted by four, young black males. A disturbance is obvious to him. He goes to investigate," said Capt. Steven Harold of the transit police agency.

Police said the man, who worked at a nearby Starbucks, appeared to be a in a defensive mode, as if threatened by the teens.

As the transit police sergeant approached, he radioed in that a fight was possibly in progress. The juvenile males fled down the concourse, while the man was in some type of physical distress.

SEPTA police said they took one male into custody on the concourse, near 11th Street, in connection with the case.

"The man goes into what appears to be cardiac arrest. He's unable to give any information as to what actually was transpiring," Harold said.

The man was rushed to the hospital but later pronounced dead.

Authorities said they are now trying to determine the extent of the physical altercation.

"The sergeant's view was observing some type of disturbance that the male was having with these four youth," Harold said.

Police did not release a description of any other juveniles possibly involved in the incident.

Commuters were being turned away from the westbound entrance but service on the Market-Frankford Line was not disrupted.

Philadelphia and SEPTA police have launched a joint investigation into the incident.

No doubt the youths will claim that he used the N-word, and some members of the jury will believe them.

I have a dear niece and her husband who are renting a row type house in a very poor section, but its the old Italian section... its supposed to be "trendy"....there are lots of "newcomers" if you know what I mean.....it scares me to death thinking of her there, and going to and fro work....

young people do not realize the danger.....they will eventually...

I’m not an expert, but I do remember that Philly and Pittsburgh are different than the rest of PA. Frepmail basil and maybe her Philly SAS folkls can speak to it.

Philly used to be it’s own world when Fast Eddie Rendell was mayor, our steenkin’ permits were no good there. It’s been changed since and as far as I know, if your state has a reciprocal agreement with PA you’re good to go.

Philly sucked way before Goode was Mayor. I remember the race fighting at 29th & Tasker (back in the 70’s) with those in the projects and also the fights on 2 street once the Whitman *low income* (projects) were built. The former, cops lined up on 29th & Tasker to keep the peace between the neighborhood and the project people. And the latter, those living on 2 street were racist, trying to save their neighborhood.

Of course, the poor black minority people were victims and the whites trying to protect their neighborhood were the aggressors (roll my eyes).

Philly sucked long before Goode was Mayor, he just made it worse and gave the minorities more of a platform to spew their hate and their racism.

My Dad used to say, this summer this city is gonna burn. I grew up hearing that. It didn’t burn because the minorities were appeased and given a free pass on everything while many others, non-minorites, moved when they had the chance.

Mayor Goode burned out a black neighborhood trying to appease the good people living there tired of dealing with the MOVE low lifes that threatened their neighborhood. Then he got a free pass for doing that because he was black.

Is this the “socialization” homeschoolers are missing?

What the heck does this thread have to do with homeschooling. Are you lost?

This thread has nothing to do with homeschooling. For heavens sakes I lived in philly, south philly, my entire life growing up (sorry for the screwy sentence structure but I figure you’re smart enough to figure it out).

Philly sucked long before Goode was Mayor. Rizzo also sucked as a Mayor, imo. Then he tried to run as a republican and lost. And don’t even get me started on his brother the Fire Commissioner.

this has nothing to do with homeschooling (some make every darn thread about homeschooling), it’s city living and it’s worse now than when I lived there. And, I could fight my way out of any situation and did because I had to. Life is hard. Sometimes it sucks.

I decided it wasn’t worth the hassle to check it on the airplane

I've flown with a pistols and shotguns a number of times. It really is not a big deal. Takes about five or ten extra minutes at each end. Just make sure the chamber is empty!

16-year-old charged with murder & conspiracy to commit murder. Attack took place at 13th & Market, the victim worked at the Marriott Starbucks (near the PA Convention Center). Kids playing hooky, attack at 2:30 PM in what is normally a very heavily populated part (and relatively safe) part of the city during business hours.

Yes, this is true. And we will get much more of this IF Obama WINS the Presidency. I can assure you.

Philadelphia and Pittsburgh do not have to issue you permits, but if you have a Pennsylvania carry permit, they must honor it.

As stated on this Pennsylvania Firearm Owners Association page, "It should be noted that permits issued by one county must be honored by all counties including Philadelphia regardless of rumors to the contrary." I am not a lawyer and this isn't legal advice, but I believe there was a major court decision that confirmed this.

HOWEVER, there are recently proposed attempts to overturn this--to allow Philadelphia to block concealed carry even with a valid Pennsylvania License To Carry Firearms (Concealed Carry Permit). Although I hope this doesn't go through, it's getting more likely as time goes on, I think. :-(
