Miami police could soon be the first in the United States to use cutting-edge, spy-in-the-sky technology to beef up their fight against crime.

A small pilotless drone manufactured by Honeywell International, capable of hovering and "staring" using electro-optic or infrared sensors, is expected to make its debut soon in the skies over the Florida Everglades.

If use of the drone wins Federal Aviation Administration approval after tests, the Miami-Dade Police Department will start flying the 14-pound (6.3 kg) drone over urban areas with an eye toward full-fledged employment in crime fighting...

How high do they fly? Attempting to adjust scope.

I can’t see how are they going to use this thing in a hostage situation with a barricaded subject. These acts occur almost universally inside a building. They use a sniper and spotter, or several of them, to watch the scene. This sounds like it will be put to other uses.

This article illustrates the lowly state of journalism. It does not explain “why” they are putting drones in the Everglades.

Wait until it starts patroling the neighborhoods. Imagine sitting outside with a cup of coffee, minding your own business, and one of those things hovers to observe your activity. Nothing about this is right. Orwellian indeed!

How high do they fly?

Shouldn't be too hard to get them to come down.... A couple of buxom nude sunbathers in a fenced yard should do it..Maybe just life sized cutouts if the real 'decoys' present a problem...

dont even laugh about it - no doubt theyll elevate the tool to "officer" status like the K9's...

what always has amazed me is that if K9's are officers, why are they allowed to maul the perp and regular human officers get sued ?

It isn’t ‘sporting’ using bait...but it is effective. (8^D)

I think it's most likely intended for keeping track of cars the police are chasing

"The CIA acknowledges that it developed a dragonfly-sized UAV known as the "Insectohopter" for laser-guided spy operations as long ago as the 1970s."

Interesting, there is only one Google search result for "insectohopper".
