It seems as if Hillary Clinton can’t catch Barack Obama in pledged delegates or in the popular vote, meaning it could all come down to super-delegates.
One of Minnesota’s most prominent super-delegates, Walter Mondale, told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS he’s worried that his party is headed for a ‘super-sized’ political disaster if a nominee isn't chosen before the Democratic National Convention.
Mondale has attended Democratic National Conventions for nearly 50 years. He said he’s never seen anything like what’s happening in 2008.
"I'm very frustrated by it," he said.
Obama and Clinton will likely go into the 2008 convention with neither one having enough delegates earned through primaries and caucuses to win the nomination.
"If we have a system where we go through all these elections and you can't elect or nominate anybody. Then you turn it over to the so-called ‘super-delegates’ who weren't elected and you can see why people are not going to like that," Mondale explained.
Political science Professor Larry Jacobs paints a worst-case scenario if super-delegates make a controversial decision.
"The Democratic Party is in a real pickle. One of the worst moments in Democratic Party history was in 1968. You had riots and the convention didn't have a whole lot of legitimacy. The question in 2008 is, are we going to be back in 1968 and with that sort of meltdown?"
There’s even a split among Minnesota’s super-delegates. Party leaders like Brian Melendez and Donna Cassutt support Obama, while Mondale supports Clinton. No one knows how the party will come together to pick a nominee.
"So however this is done, it has to be done in a way that the public feels it is their decision. How we do that, I don't know," said Mondale.
Political experts tell 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that they cannot envision a scenario where either Clinton or Obama would withdraw before the convention.
There is not enough popcorn for this show.
Thanks for the ping. Hillaryous thread. Interesting thought.
When Mondale ran against President Ronald Wilson Reagan, he lost 49 states, the largest political fanny whipping in American history.
When he got into the Senate race for Wellstone's seat he lost...again by a significant margin.
This clown has been completely rejected by all 50 states and people ask his opinion on anything?
Cognitive Dissonance Disease
As the record holder for taking the biggest ash kicking in American history, mondull should know a thing or two about losing, and he does.
When there was still honor in politics, the loser (Hillary) would have stepped down for the good of the party. That's how it should be done.
1. Michael Steele
2. J.C. Watts
3. Bobby Jindal (not black, but still a minority)
Maybe Obama can reach out to the Clinton supporters by selecting Mondale's daughter as his running mate. I seem to recall that she had a friendly relationship with Bill Clinton while he was President.
btt

I like it. And given that Jimmy Carter went down to the biggest defeat of a sitting President in history, he is eligible for a second term.
With two Noble Peace laureates in the White House, peace would spontaneously break out all over the place. Global warming would be eradicated and love would steer the stars—this would be the dawning of the age of Aquarius, Aquarius.
Don’t think for a moment that the clinton’s won’t have something to say about that.
The Clinton’s are going scorched earth. It’s either Billary or nobody. If it’s nobody then it will be McCain in November. That makes it a d’RAT open field in 2012. Billary will be 64 then and still young enough to run again.
But, she’ll have to go all in on that contest, because she will be running for re-election to her senate seat in 2012 and will be an easy target.
An interesting exercie might be to see how many peoples live went into the dumper after being associated with the Clintons. I'm not talking Arkancide, just having everything in your life unravel. Bet there is a lot.
Hugo Chavez, Kim Jong Il, Ahmedinejab, and Robert Mugabe are all no doubt on the short list to win the Nobel Prize in the near future...so Obama can invite all the Nobel laureates to Camp David and solve all the world’s problem through dialogue.
Gee. I never thought of that.
Huh.
Whatever (see below):
Dunno, was thinking more along the lines of this guy:
...should work.
They'll GO for it without any doubt if they can be "convinced" they voted "incorrectly" and that ONLY the party KNOWS the "correct" vote. Well then. Without doubt Carl Rove IS a bastard.
