I personally don't believe that this proposed missile system is purely for the defense of Europe against an Iranian attack. The Bush regime is the most secretive in recent memory and you can never know for sure what their true motives are.

Meanwhile, Bush and the neocons are escalating their demonization of Russia. Instead of respecting Russia's vital national interests and their legitimate security concerns, we are saying to them, “it's our way or the highway.”

We are basically telling the Russians “Trust Us - We won’t attack you.” What if the tables were turned and they (or Iran or NK) were building a Missile Shield?

The Russians have long had their own antiballistic missile defense system protecting Moscow. Everybody knew about it, which is part of the reason that the Russians didn't squawk too loudly when we set the ABM Treaty aside.

Hmmm. Might have something to do with Russia’s FSB going back to targeted killings back in 2003. To me, they broke trust first and if they really wanted to be an ally, they would have honored investments from our big oil guys here at home.

Instead, they nationalized all energy assets, threatened neighbors which are new allies using energy cut-off, jailed dissidents, targeted killing of others.

Third issue is Russia’s transfer of Saddam’s chemical agents out of Iraq from one specific location to another. Arming Iran and providing them a carte blanche protection pact shows they are more then willing to see Iran committ suicide on Israel for their own gain. But of course, global instability has always been Russia’s way of thinking about profiteering. We only saw a ten year pause of this behavior and truth be told Clinton and Boris Yeltsin/Russia Oligarchs had a field day fleecing much wealth that could have been used to accelerate free markets there. The switch from communist to kind-of-a-democracy to fascism was easy for the Russian people to accept. Some of Putin’s moves until 2003 seemed justified to rebuild law and order in the country but now it appears he is gearing up for the next global conflict and egging it on. On our side of the world, we will make Putin’s job easier to gain many allies of this coming conflict considering several dozen men fleeced much of the entire worlds wealth (especially Joe-six packs) in the last few years. Many people will wake up one day and the dollar will be worth about five cents. This will happen to all dollar holders around the globe. Do you think other nations will think kindly of us?

To demonstrate our displeasure of these thuggish, Soviet style moves in 2003, we funded the Orange Revolution in Ukraine. Now all bets are off. We should build a *hitload of nuclear subs/B2’s and arm them with MX style missles. If Gorbachev wants to help he can broker a deal with Putin/Bush to immediately halt Iranian nuclear weapons. In exchange, no missle shield and we withdraw from Kosovo. Problem is, the Russian’s know our financial system is weak so our cards on the table is also not ace-high right now. Consider last time Soviets made moves was after our last deep oil led recession of 1979, 80.

Is Russia our enemy in this war or a reluctant ally?

Since the end of the Cold War we have lacked a coherent policy of dealing with the Russians. The advantages of an anti-missile shield in the Czech republic should be carefully weighted against the disadvantages.

I am yet to be convinced that the target of the anti-missile shield is Iran. If the target were to be Iran, does anything stop us from siting an anti-missile shield in say, Greece? Why Czech? Do we deliberately want to rub it into the faces of the Russians?

If it stops missiles, who cares whose missiles are stopped?

Gorby needs to embed the ABM rhetoric in Global Warming phrasing so somebody will at least be able to pretend to be listening.

For all the rhetoric & posturing by Russia, anyone with even the slightest bit of common sense can see that a few dozen DEFENSIVE missiles are nothing compared to THOUSANDS of Offensive Nuclear Tipped missiles pointed against them.

If you compare this to the Cuban Missile crisis in the 1962 when Russia placed missiles in Cuba and they were Interceptor Missiles then there would not been a crisis.

The heart of the matter is that Russia dont want any RADARS looking into their backyard - the interceptor missiles are irrelevant.
