Before checking your iPhone in line at the locally owned coffee shop was thought cool, long before counter culture became pop culture, and before the Peoples Republic of Berkeley became the quintessential role model of liberal college students, hippie disgruntlement was a bloody affair.
Unbeknownst to the present generation of Prius owners, in the 1970s the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), a group of militants, defined the anti-establishment attitude for which Berkeley has a reputation. A far cry from todays idea of sticking it to the man by petitioning the Olympic committee to add Ultimate Frisbee as an official event, it terrorized California for years.

He writes like someone who wasn't ever in Berkeley in the 60's and 70's. Hippies from their beginning have always been dope-smoking, peace-loving, do-nothings. It's not that they are lazy--they aren't---they just have no interests in politics or rabble-rousing. The right-leaning media pundits in the 60's wrongly characterized long-haired bomb throwers as hippies because their attire looks hippie-like. This nominal assignment has stuck ever since. I'm not defending hippies, but this characterization of them is, quite simply, false.
Well, he is a she, and she was certainly not in Berkeley in the ‘60s or ‘70s because she is 22 years old.
But I’d say she knows her history fairly well, and her point is that today’s liberal “radicals” are quite the joke compared to the likes of Olson and the SLA - and of course, Olson’s “principles” are quite the joke considering how she now tries to game the system for her own benefit.
My point is a simple one: liberal radicals are not hippies. In fact, they were known in Berkeley in the 60’s and 70’s as: “Radicals.”
I keep getting this psycho mixed up with the one who shot at President Ford in 1975. I think she was Sara Jane Moore. Did I hear she died?
Sarah Jane Moore was released from prison at the beginning of this year. She was the one who attempted to Kill Pres. Ford in 1975. I believe she still lives.
Squeaky Frome
I think it was Abbie Hoffman (what a pig!) that said that protest was 10% protest and 90% party. He was right about THAT.
College kids taking advantage of any situation to have a good time...go figure!
