Massive grass fire blamed on gopher hunt

A man accused of causing an enormous grass fire in Springbank while trying to kill gophers may be facing charges and fines worth thousands of dollars.

Firefighters believe a large fire that burned Saturday in the Springbank Heights area for hours was started by a man shoving a propane torch down a gopher hole.

The fire destroyed vehicles and outbuildings in the quarter section it burned.

A fire ban is on in the area. The man faces a large fine for having an open flame, said Rocky View assistant deputy fire Chief Jim Pendergast.

The man could also face a bill for the cost of firefighter upwards of $40,000.

Sometimes it just has to be done. I had decent success with a pump 12 gauge 4 shot shell but next I might try the old water hose and exhaust pipe trick.

I’m surprised the snow has already melted up in Calgary. Must have been a dry winter.

“Licensed to kill gophers by the government of the United Nations. Man-free to kill gophers at will. To kill, you must know your enemy, and in this case my enemy is a varmint. And a varmint will never quit - ever. They’re like the Viet-Cong...Varmint-Cong. So you have to fall back on superior firepower and superior intelligence. And that’s all she wrote.”

Reminds me of a friend’s experience..

His front yard became the preferred residence of a family of groundhogs.

His effort to “remove” them all failed...

He decided to pour a “little” gasoline into the several entrances/exits to the underground tunnel system - and allowed the tunnel system to get “saturated” in his term..

When Dennis lit the nearest tunnel entrance - he said there was a big WHOOSH! — and most of his front yard went skyward!

It was a freaking mess when we visited.... Some windows had been blown out and there was dirt and sod EVERYWHERE...except in his front yard.

He’s lucky he wasn’t killed.
