Two Democratic Senators Say HUD Secretary Should Resign
WSJ ^ | March 21, 2008 | DAMIAN PALETTA

Two top Democrats on Friday called for the resignation of U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonso Jackson, citing questions about his leadership and his agency's operations during the national housing crisis...

Democrats have raised allegations about potential improper political interference at HUD, particularly regarding to the use of contracts and federal spending. Mr. Jackson has consistently denied wrongdoing. Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd (D., Conn.) and Sen. Patty Murray, who chairs the Senate subcommittee that controls HUD's appropriations, sent a letter to President George W. Bush on Friday calling for Mr. Jackson's removal.

"Unfortunately, the allegations surrounding Secretary Jackson, as well as his rejection of appropriate Congressional oversight of his Department, undermine his ability to effectively address the current housing crisis," the lawmakers wrote. "During this critical period, the American people do not need a HUD Secretary that is distracted by the clouds of Justice Department investigations and reports of an empanelled grand jury."

HUD has emerged as a central agency as policy makers debate how to address the housing crisis. Both Democrats and the Bush administration want to expand the powers of the Federal Housing Administration, a division of HUD, to allow more homeowner to refinance into affordable mortgages. Any major changes would likely have to be approved by Sen. Dodd, and increasing the agency's budget would likely need to be authorized by Sen. Murray.

Personally, I think that everyone in Congress should step down. They are the ones who deserve the blame for all this. At the end of the article, the writer even admits that nothing can be changed unless Congress approves. That means they are in charge and have the responsibility for the current mess.

Liberal rats and rino’s caused the problem, and are completely responsible for the current mess. They will also do anything to divert attention from themselves during the meltdown.

They can effectively force the same result by simply defunding the entire department. Win-Win.

Just how in the world would Chris Dodd and Patty Murray know who is or isn't qualified to do a job, or if their performance is good or bad?

Although they had a good start at it, they have succeeded in becoming the bottom end of the US Senate ~ a total embarrassment to the foolish people who sent them there.

If you ever stood out in front of HUD at quiting time -——
you’d be speechless for weeks. Unbelieve what our tax dollars are paying for.
Q: What the hell do those people do?
A: Waste our tax dollars!

I submit for a vote: “Chris Dodd and Patty Murray should both resign.”

Justification: both are totally incompetent...

Better yet, the entire HUD Dept. and its Secretary should be eliminated.

Its time has passed, along with other dinosaurs like the Dept. of Education and its Secretary.

Don't get me started on Homeland Security or the Surgeon General.

We literally can't know what they are doing with the money. Their accounting is so bad auditors have given up trying to figure it out. It is a national scandal of stupendous proportions and nobody talks about it.

You forgot Department of Energy - keeping gasoline prices low and still trying to invent an electric car.

Shockingly I agree with them! Jackson would quit and everyone who works for HUD should be fired and get real jobs, HUD should not exist.
