How quaint. Me, I learned from McCain-Feingold, McCain-Kennedy, McCain-Edwards, McCain-Lieberman...
Someone's got Johnny's nads in a liberal lock box.
—remembering the “Keating Five” situation as I do, had they not been Democrats, Cranston and DeConcini whould have gone to jail-—McCain was somewhat of a dupe-—
no matter who wins in November, we’re screwed!
Somewhat of a dupe my arse...
McCain knew Keating was in trouble and admits he didn’t want to participate in a meeting with banking regulators. When Keating applied pressure, McCain met with them anyway, twice.
One of the banking regulators said this. “McCain didn’t ask us to do anything for Keating, he didn’t have to. When five U.S. Senators ask for a meeting with you it is intimidating in and of itself.”
Referals were set to go out against Keating before the meeting, but didn’t get processed for another two years.
McCain himself looks back on this period in this manner. “It was a dark time in my life, I wasn’t myself, I was doing things that weren’t really me.”
McCain is a skunk and he knows it.
What does that mean? He was not culpable in that scandal. The Senate Judiciary chief counsel said that McCain did nothing wrong and was an honest man.
“I learned from McCain-Feingold, McCain-Kennedy, McCain-Edwards, McCain-Lieberman...”
McQueeg has a guilt complex.
What I remember about the Keating 5 is how the Dems returned Don Riegle to his post as chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs after the scandal.
Just words, montag813, just words.
I guess it depends on what the definition of culpable IS. ;-)
Oh, and you're right, he 'skated'.The following article covers that.
If noting else, the affair ought to speak volumes about those who occupy the most exclusive club on the planet, the US Senate.
Remember the Keating Five? (threads at FR)

If nothing
I learned McCain soul comes cheap.
Typical blowhard response. If the man had any character he would have resigned. Just another liberal hack.
Someone's got Johnny's nads in a liberal lock box.
The fool is owned and operated by the chamber of commerce and the Gucci Gulch lobbyists.
You forgot to mention that the Senate Judiciary Committee's chief counsel was Robert (Bob) Bennett the defender of the "Great Stainmaker" himself. What a tower of morality and great judge of character he is!
McCain wrote the letters after receiving more than $20,000 in contributions from the company's executives and lobbyists. Chief executive Lowell W. "Bud" Paxson also lent McCain his company's jet at least four times during 1999 for campaign travel."
Wasn't this "quick consideration" of the station transfer asked for after almost two years of unacceptable foot-dragging by the FCC? And it was asked for because the funding that would back it, if successful, was expiring? Look - McCain admits that his Keating experience was not his most shining moment, and learned from it. He's far from perfect. Don't let the perfect ideal make an enemy of the good. The freepers on this thread need to take a chill pill and relax.
“no matter who wins in November, were screwed!”
That’s a given.
IMO McCain is better than what else is being offered but it sure is hard biting my tongue on his handling of the Vietnam POW/MIA issue.
McCain & Co laid the groundwork for a massive fleecing of the American taxpayer due to the Savings & Loan scandal resulting in the need for the Resolution Trust Corporation. Had they not intervened in the pleadings of their benefactor, Charlie Keating, before federal regulators, the regulators would have shut Keating down before he was able to compound his fraud.
The failure of the Keating empire also caused the downfall of many small businesses that were involved in construction contracts. I know because I worked for one of those small businesses that was defrauded and paid pennies on the dollar by the RTC. I will not forget or forgive McQueeg. It is obvious by the FCC intervention that he didn’t learn anything from the Keating scrape. As far as I am concerned, he is just an unindicted co-conspirator and I don’t really care read from FReepers like you about the “ideal being the enemy of the good” because McQueeg qualifies for neither appellation.
You can keep your chill pill supply as I am certain you are going to need it next year, no matter the result of the election.
We are SCREWED.... this clown is going to “get things done” in the White House. Which means more government regulations and taxes.
He “believes” in global warming, not drilling in the “pristine” ANWAR area. Thinks that his most important job is “getting things done” in government, as opposed to letting people “get things done” with the government insuring the rule of law and protection against enemies foreign and domestic.
He wants to “work for the people”.... GAWD!!!! I’m sorry, but just because you’re a Naval jet pilot doesn’t mean you can be a great legislator.
just because you got shot down doesn’t make you a “hero”. It just means you got shot down.
I seriously think that he’s got so much baggage that the libs are going to win this election no matter who “wins”.
Well since the then-Judiciary Committee hired him to be chief counsel, I guess you can proclaim the entire Committee as amoral and without character as well, and dismiss the matter entirely.
