It wasn't enough to bring forward the first woman to mount a serious run at the presidency; they also produced the first black candidate with a chance to win. This split two core Democratic constituencies, ensuring that at least one segment of their most reliable supporters would feel betrayed and abandoned yet again. They then cleverly arranged to exclude from the primary process two of the states most important to their success in the fall, in effect telling Michigan and Florida to get lost.
Not content, they adhered to a selection system that made it almost certain that any contest between two evenly matched opponents would be inconclusive. And to put a cherry on this banana-republic split, they put the final deciding power in hands of “super delegates”---a polite term for party hacks---taking us back to the days of the “smoke-filled room.”
As a result, Democrats are facing three months of guerrilla warfare between two estimable candidates, one of whom will leave the convention as the triumphant nominee---nose bent to one side, an ear hanging by a thread, missing three front teeth:
To be greeted by a tanned, rested John McCain who will then summon the justly famous Republican attack machine whose engineers will have spent the previous six months taking notes.
Sen. Hillary Clinton's approach is particularly problematic. Her main argument against Sen. Barack Obama is that she is more experienced and would make a stronger commander-in-chief “from day one.”
However specious those claims may be, she is taken seriously when she makes them. She will be laughed off the stage, however, if she makes them against John McCain, who has more experience and is a war hero besides.
Obama's message of change, hope and soaring rhetoric might be a bit ephemeral for some but it at least provides a contrast to McCain, whose speeches are Rotarian in style and who offers only more of President George W. Bush's magic elixir.
Now, it could be that the economy is such a horror show by November that a Republican victory is truly impossible. But should the economy go that far south, the Republicans are perfectly capable of convincing voters that the Democrats are at fault.
Remember, you don't have to fool all of the people all of the time; you have to fool half of them for a single day in November, once every four years.

...make any sense? It doesn’t. Bush and the RINOs were in control EVERYTHING from 2000-2006 and in control of The White House for over 7 years. The Dems can only be blamed for being like the House Repubs were accused of being—a do nothing Congress. Bush has created the policy. How this fool can pin the nation’s woes on the Dems is beyond me, and I’m an Indy con, not a Dem.
The only question right now is what federal department will Huma be appointed to head in January 2009, the new Department of Homo Affairs?

I was hoping for the first dwarf, the first blind person, the first person with size 18 shoes, the first person with 12 toes, or 11 fingers. Why stop with pigmentation and sex organs - when shallow's the goal, go all the way.
There is a hellish economic meltdown coming, I think. But the media and the Dems will blame it on Bush, anyway.

I have a very good friend from grade school all the way through college who was a precinct captain for Obama in Seattle during the Washington State caucus/primary. He briefed me on the dirty tricks of the Clinton campaign. I waited. And yes, despite the huge lump in his throat, he admitted that I was probably right all through the Clinton years. I presented him with plenty of facts in the 90’s and he always used Carville spin as retorts. I should note he’s a physics undergrad and attorney, no intellectual shlub.

I don’t dislike thoughtful Democrats and in-fact get along perfectly well with many. We have our debates and I like to think I’ve opened a few minds but I enjoy it none-the-less.
I’ve taken some of the comments from that DU thread not for schaudenfraud but to illustrate that there are people who are coming to terms with their prior support of the Clintons and maybe thinking that those of us that opposed them are not knuckle dragging cave men. I welcome this progress.

I’ve felt obliged to tell those friends and acquaintances who we were affiliated with when living on bases during the 1990s that THEY WERE RIGHT about the BAD character and LACK OF INTEGRITY of both Clintons. Yes, (I’m sweating blood confessing this) to people I once argued with BUT the Clintons are as smarmy as they come.
I was thinking today about the Arkansas State Troopers who said under oath that they provided security for Bill Clinton during trysts in the governor’s mansion. I bought the spin that they were just stupid rednecks sponsored by wealthy vindictive right wingers. Judging by the Clintons’ behavior, these were probably decent men.

the Clintons were always this way. I was blind to the way they were because the attacks came from the reTHUGs. I hated the reTHUGs so much that I didn’t believe ANYTHING they said. In opposition to them I defended EVERYTHING the Clintons said and did.
