Strpce _ A vehicle belonging to the Serbian Helsinki Committee for Human Rights was pelted with eggs and snow Friday by a group of Kosovo Serbs in the enclave of Strpce.
Some 60 Kosovo Serbs, claiming to be supporters of Serbia's nationalist Radical Party attacked the bus as it entered Strpce, according to Kosovo Police Spokesman Veton Elshani.
Radical Party respresentative in the town, Zvonko Mihajlovic, said the Serbs were not party members but "a spontaneous group of people displeased with what the Helsinki Committee in Serbia does."
He added the Committee's intention "wasn't an assessment of Serb human rights but to promote Kosovo's independence... Serbs in Strpce do not accept Kosovo's independence therefore all those who promote it are not welcomed in Strpce.”
Members of the Committee, Sonja Biserko, Borka Pavicevic, Obrad Savic and Vera Markovic said their intention was to learn about the problems enclave Serbs face during their trip to Strpce. They were led out of the town by Kosovo police.
Serbia's Helsinki Committee is known for protecting the rights of ethnic minority communities, and in Kosovo they have been involved in investigating war crimes against Kosovar Albanians perpetrated by the regime of Slobodan Milosevic in the 1990s.
Helsinki Committees are volunteer or non-governmental organisations found in most countries which signed the Helsinki Accords on Human Rights in 1975.
