Megaminister: Questions for the Rev. John Hagee
NY Times Sunday Magazine ^ | March 23, 2008 | Interview by DEBORAH SOLOMON

Posted on 03/22/2008 12:45:52 PM PDT by Pharmboy

As a prominent evangelical pastor based in San Antonio, you were recently catapulted into national controversy when you endorsed Senator John McCain for president. Is it true that McCain actively sought your endorsement? It’s true that McCain’s campaign sought my endorsement.

How did you feel when critics called you a Catholic-basher and said McCain should reject your endorsement? My statements regarding the Catholic Church have been grossly mischaracterized. I never called the Catholic Church “the anti-Christ” or a “false cult system.” I was referring to those Christians who ignore the Gospels.

What about your observation in a recent book that “most readers will be shocked by the clear record of history linking Adolf Hitler and the Roman Catholic Church in a conspiracy to exterminate the Jews”? What I was trying to express was the fact that Christian anti-Semitism — both Catholic and Protestant — contributed to an environment in which Nazi racial anti-Semitism could flourish.

But why bring all of that up now? ’Cause most of the world don’t know it. Christians don’t know it at all.

Two years ago, you founded Christians United for Israel , an influential lobbying group that has won accolades from many Jewish leaders. I’m trying to do something beneficial for the state of Israel and the Jewish people. It’s the right thing to do. If you take the Jewish contribution away from Christianity, there would be no Christianity.

That’s a touching sentiment, but some are concerned that the Zionism of American evangelicals stems from self-interest. Isn’t your involvement in Israel based on a desire to speed the second coming of Jesus? Our support of Israel has nothing to do with any kind of “end times” Bible scenario.

You’re not just sitting around waiting for the Rapture? No.

Actually, Hagee should apologize for supporting McCain,

Thanks I was starting to think I was the only one wondering what in the world possessed Dr. Hagee to endorse Capt. McCain.

Define “cult” that excludes any Christian religion.

“Where and when did he say that?” ~ deuteronlmy232

And as an aside, please be aware that all heresy begins with misdefining the Godhead (who and what Gid is and what he is doing)

Hagee preaches a false gospel (The gospel is the good news about the FINISHED work of Christ on the cross.)

To: Comparative Advantage

As a non Catholic, I could care less if the Pope says I’m not going to heaven because I am a Bible based Christian and not a Catholic. We can happily co-exist as brothers and sisters in Christ. I let God have the final say.

“I hate to burst your heretical bubble, but Catholics are Christians, too.”

That’s where the diagreement lies.

I leave it up to God and happily co-exist with whatever His decision is. It’s His call; not mine to make on that.

“Define “cult” that excludes any Christian religion.”

Just read the major books on cults.

The Catholic site Catholic Answers will also give some information on their labeling of Mormonism as not-Christian.

That doesn’t negate the fact that there are plenty of biblically illiterate Christians in Mormon congregations, just as there are biblically illiterate Christians in Hagee’s congregation.

I said that Catholics are Christians, too and you said that right there is where the disagreement lies.

Really? It isn’t what you believe that tells the tale, it’s what you deny.

They don’t deny the _finished_ work of the Messiah (Christ) on the cross like Hagee does.

Is there anything more important than that in your estimation?

So tell me - what is it that Catholics _deny_ that makes them non-Christians in your book?

I do enjoy listening to Hagee. I am sure he has a few choice things to say about us too(LDS), but I do like him. He seems like a pretty solid guy. I like Catholics too, they seem like pretty descent folks and I come from a long line of Irish Catholics who were very kind to me growing up.

Mormons aren’t Christians, they are Mormons. See the Catholic link in the post that you responded to.

Hagee is right on Biblically and Doctrinally and I've read most of his books. The thing that gets me is in his preaching he sometimes gets that Elmer Gantry type of hollering and getting quite loud. That is one reason I never listen to Ron Parsley either.

“You cannot censor open discussion of Romney, he is still in play.”

I was not doing any such thing, I was taking issue with your characterization of mormons as cultists.

There’s really nothing to fall for here. Hagee did an excellent job in this interview. :-)

“I was taking issue with your characterization of mormons as cultists”

In every cult book that I have ever read, they are listed.

Our largest religions, Catholic and Southern Baptist among others categorize them as a non- Christian cult.

That is why Christian churches require Mormons to be Baptized.

It seems peculiar for someone not to know that.
