The search for suspects in a Pleasanton double homicide has gone national.
Listed under a search for fugitives, "America's Most Wanted" has posted details on the killings of husband and wife, Ernie Scherer and Charlene Abendroth on its Web site.
The site lists some incorrect information on the case, however.
"America's Most Wanted" states that the couple had just returned from trips to Antarctica and the Galapagos Islands, when they had actually just traveled to South America. The site also states that a security guard was sent to their home, when it was in fact a Castlewood County Club maintenance worker who looked through a window and saw Scherer lying on the floor, said Sgt. J.D. Nelson, a spokesman for the Alameda County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators said the couple, brutally beaten before they died, were found in their Castlewood Country Club more than a week after they were killed.
Deputies were called to the home March 14 after the couple's worried daughter called country club staff because she hadn't heard from her parents for several days.
Scherer, 60, and Abendroth, 57, were found in their pajamas in different rooms near the front of their home at 18 Castlewood Drive. Authorities are not releasing any other details about the crime scene.
Things were disturbed in the house, but not ransacked. Investigators don't know whether robbery was a motive.
Investigators said they are looking into every aspect of Scherer and Abendroth's life to determine who might have wanted them dead. They do not yet have suspects or a motive in the homicides.
A real estate investor and accountant, Scherer has been described by friends as a passionate volunteer for the local Republican party and an avid poker player who participated in several professional tournaments. He also was well-known for his long and tumultuous history with the San Ramon Valley school district, where he was ousted as a board trustee in 1990.
Abendroth, known to her friends and family as Cherie Scherer, was a lecturer in accounting at Cal State East Bay and active with the Mormon church.
Memorial services for the couple will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 6100 Paseo Santa Cruz, Pleasanton.
