Barack Obama has based his entire candidacy on one thing. He wanted to be the first African-American to run for the presidency keeping the issue of race as far into the background as possible. And he almost succeeded in pulling the wool over America's eyes.
His good looks and charismatic appeal made many people view him as the next JFK. Some even thought of him as the second coming of Jesus Christ. We've all seen the pictures of him wowing the crowds with his oratories, women swooning, men cheering. And these were people of all races and creeds, desperate for a candidate who could transcend the barrier of hatred that has so divided this country over its entire history. Even those of us who are conservative, and who despise the misguided vision of the left had to admit that here was a man who broke through the walls that have kept our nation disunited for some 200-plus years.
But wait.
Were we really that far apart? What I mean is...the wounds of racial hatred have, over the past 20 years or so, been healing. The average American, black and white, doesn't harbor any ill will over those of other ethnicities. Most of us get along quite well. We didn't need a guy like Obama to remind us that race should not be an issue. The fact that he was embraced by the voting public should have been an indication that America was ready to put bigotry behind it and accept a black candidate.
And then Obama blew it.
We suddenly find out that we knew absolutely nothing about this guy called Barack Obama. For twenty years, he attended a church in Chicago pastored by a racist whose hatred for America, and especially whites in America, is blatant. Reverend Jeremiah Wright believes our nation was responsible for the attacks of 9-11, and that aids was created to exterminate the black race.
Obama then gave a speech in which acted as an apologist for Wright and refused to disown him. In fact, he continues to embrace him.
That's when the sleeping giant was awakened. The campaign that was supposed to eliminate color suddenly found itself embroiled in controversy. Obama pulled the scabs from the healing wounds of racial divide and now the issue of race is on the front burner.
Will Obama's candidacy be hurt by this? Most certainly. Will his continued association with this church be scrutinized? Absolutely. Will Hillary Clinton and John McCain benefit? You bet.
Will America suffer?
It already has.

“Don’t even get me started on the injustices of Affirmative Action. My parters daughter was denied entry in favor of less qualified Minorities (AKA as Favored Groups) to Universities that subscribe to this bigotry.”
THIS is the sleeping giant, and yes, he’s now awake.
And, you know, while the American people were in the process of giving countless millions out of their own pockets to the SA, RC and other disaster relief groups, never mind how many debit cards our taxes provided etc.
Well said!
I disagree. Discussion about race in this country has been one sided since the 1960s. It boiled down to all whites are racist, and it is impossible for a black to be racist. Any attempt to move the discussion off those two points was impossible.
I think Obamba has done this nation a great service. The revelation of what goes on in some black churches has been like a cold bucket of water dropped on America's head. Racist come in all colors, not just white.
More importantly, it is now possible to discuss the reason why racial turmoil continues to boil just under the surface. Some is the result of white racist (who are quickly condemned and rightly condemned when exposed), but some is also the result of black racist who until now have been able to hide behind media protection.
Thank you Obama for doing your nation a great service.
Personally, I'd rank white America in the top 10% of the LEAST racist countries. (Black America, on the other hand, has some huge pockets of racism to deal with)
That's a hell of a lot of people!
Americans are very much into self-flagellation and are far too eager to accept unfounded criticism without objection or refutation with facts. Your post enunciates a few of these facts about Racism in America and just where real racism exists. Black Africa is just such a place.
Do you mean foreigners?
Just because America lives in a Utopian world, it doesn't mean we all must.
"Personally, I'd rank white America in the top 10% of the LEAST racist countries. (Black America, on the other hand, has some huge pockets of racism to deal with)."
I do believe there is no such country as "White" America.
Yep. Many have been duped.
If Obama doesn’t get the nomination, Hillary loses a lot of black votes, and she doesn’t have enough positives to overcome her negatives. Without the black vote, she has no chance.
If Obama does get the nomination, he loses to McCain...unless there are a lot more anti-McC nuts out there than are here on FR. This little fracas has brought reality back to the delusional Republicans who were a little in love with the idea of voting for a black person, and probably turned off the Reagan Dems, and blue collar guys and gals..
McCain isn’t my first, second, third or even fifth choice, but he stands far above the other two, and I for one will not throw away my vote.
He cant disown Wright, for the same reason he chose that church to begin with...Because its where many of the rich and powerful in the Chicago black community go to services...and he needed to see and be seen by, and with, them.
It wouldn’t surprise me to find out that he actually didn’t hear many of Wrights hateful rants, not because he wasn’t physically there, but that he was so zoned out, contemplating his approach to the people whose influence he wanted, once the services ended, he only noticed the silences.
In a word, SHEEP... (good post, BTW)
I agree. The riots and killings will be nation wide.
Bambi does have great smile. I bet the devil does too.
No, I think it was the images & sound emanating in a loop-de-loop from the video display terminals of 250 million butt-bound, high-cholesterol Americans that "woke the sleeping giant"...
The medium IS the message!
We'll see what YouTube & the MSM have in store for Hitlery & McCainez...
“Bingo! I would say Chebama has set back race relations 50 years. What an unbelievable creep..”
An important distinction to be made is it is the CAMPAIGN he has run, and the content of his character that have been alienating and divisive...it is not the mere candidacy of a black potus candidate.
Those who can not or will not think hard enough to understand that distinction are guilty of not rising above the base, common denominator of seeing only black and white.
The enlightened minority of folks who do know that are the best hope we have.
Sorry. I thought I was talking to you, Buridan, about post #47, when I meant to address BARLF. (I’m not the best.) (Or the smartest.) (And that’s what scares me about the Left—I’m smarter than they are!!!)
Yeah—SHEEP! Thanks for the compliment, but your’s was more to the point—and a laconic distillation.
What the Osama/Reverend Wright flap has revealed is the 900 pound gorilla in the room that the media and the politically correct have been refusing to see or hear and that is black racism. It does exist and is expressed openly by blacks and it is just as evil as any other form of racism. Only the controllers of our society have decided for the nation as a whole to tolerate it until now that it has become intolerable. Do not forget that Sharpton has promised riots if Osama does not get the nomination.
