SALEM, Ore. (AP) A co-chairman of Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign yesterday compared former President Bill Clinton to Joseph McCarthy, the 1950s senator whom liberals widely revile as a witch-hunting fascist, after Mr. Clinton seemed to question Mr. Obama's patriotism.
Retired Gen. Merrill "Tony" McPeak, a former Air Force chief of staff, said he was disappointed by comments Mr. Clinton made while campaigning for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton yesterday in Charlotte, N.C.
"I think it would be a great thing if we had an election year where you had two people who loved this country and were devoted to the interest of this country," Mr. Clinton said, "instead of all this other stuff that always seems to intrude itself on our politics."
Gen. McPeak called Mr. Clinton's statement horrible and compared it to the anti-communist Republican senator from Wisconsin.
"It sounds more like McCarthy," Gen. McPeak said. "I was going to college when Joe McCarthy was accusing good Americans of being traitors, so I've had enough of it."

Clinton wishes he was as relevant as Joe McCarthy.
From Wikipedia:
He was appointed Air Force Chief of Staff by President George H.W. Bush
In 1996, McPeak served as Oregon state chairman for the Bob Dole for President campaign. During the presidential election of 2000 McPeak endorsed George W. Bush and served as co-chairman of Oregon Veterans for Bush.[1]
As the military and foreign policy of the Bush administration coalesced, however, McPeak expressed strong objections, especially with regard to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. McPeak later openly campaigned for Howard Dean’s nomination, and when Dean withdrew, acted as an adviser for the John Kerry campaign. He was also one of twenty-seven signatories to the statement of the “Committee of Diplomats & Commanders for Change” calling the Bush Administration a failure at “preserving national security” and calling for Bush not to be re-elected.
Any adult that goes from supporting conservatives to limp wristed liberals is a mental basket case.
Gen. McPeak ovbiously gets his history from the media. Senator McCarthy was more right than he knew. He was a war hero, not a draft dodger, like slick.
The moonbats over at DU are freaking out about this. I am always suspect of Willy, but I don’t really see that as taking a swipe at Obama. Am I wrong? I don’t get it.
I wouldn’t pick McCarthy. He actually rooted out a bunch of commies. State Dept was (is) full of ‘em. Where he went wrong is not realizing that some of the people he was going after were NOT communists.
I think he meant Charlie McCarthy, the puppet.
I don't get the comparison
Retired Gen. Merrill “Tony” McPeak is not exactly one of the good guys. He was with Jon Francois Carry’s staff in 2004 and was whining about the Swift Boat group exposing Kerry’s lies and inflations of his Purple Hearts for getting shot in the butt by a grain of rice, etc.
By the way, did you know Jon Carry was in Vietnam and Cambodia? Who knew?
All I can say is these people had better grow some thick skin if they think those are insults. Do they think that the President of the USA does not get all kinds of insults?
What are they having, a who gets offended the easiest contest? Maybe they ought to go serve on a school board first before they can run. Then they will understand personal insults!
The General sounds like a good man to me...There are liberal generals, I guess. Backing two losers like Dole and Kerry wasn’t too smart. The General is entitled to make mistakes.
I take back what I said about General McPeak...If he feels that way about poor Joe McCarthy, he’s not familiar with of believing in th Vinona Papers. They proved that McCarthy was right about nearly every singly Commie actor he labeled. At least seven or eight movie stars agreed with him:
Adolph Menjou
Robert Montgomery
Gary Cooper
George Murphy
Robert Taylor
Ward Bond
John Wayne
Ronald Reagan
along with producers Louis B Mayer and Jack Warner.
Name one. I’d really like to know.
Please let us see Bubba red-faced some more in the campaign. I really a so hoping for a finger wagging that turns into an assault charge (although not wishing anyone real bodily harm).
Obama aide compares Clinton to McCarthy....
bj wishes he stood for something like McCarthy ...other than molesting women or a stained blue dress!!!!
McPeak, just another “typical white person?”
