Obama's spiritual mentor to preach in Norfolk church

The Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., presidential candidate Barack Obama’s minister, agreed to speak April 13 at Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church long before his sudden notoriety for his strong social commentary.

Bank Street’s interim pastor, the Rev. William Dixon, said Wright was invited months ago because he is the nephew of the church’s late minister, the Rev. J.B. Henderson.

Wright’s visit will coincide with the church’s celebration of its booster club, formed years ago to fundraise for Henderson’s missionary travels. “We do not know at this point as to what he’ll be speaking about,” Dixon said of Wright.

Wright has drawn publicity for his vehement political critiques while senior pastor at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. He retired from the post this year.

I suspect Wright will be getting tons of invites to speak at liberal universities in the near future. They love it when guests preach to the (hate America, hate whitey) college choir.

If you think about it, this really shows just how comfortable the black community is with hateful, racist ranting. They apparently feel entitled to it. And there’s nothing Christian or uplifting about any of it — and the congregations don’t care! That’s what is so obnoxious about Obama here, but the media is doing everything it can to paint it as nothing.

As far as I can tell, there are no negative repercussions for this guy. Name one, other than being relieved of his post on the Obama campaign. Objectively speaking, can’t even call that negative, really.

He’s free to hate whitey til the cows come home. His congregations and those of other churches are free to do the same. Kind of like muslim congregations having no concrete reason to condemn radical terrorists. Why should they, when keeping mum suffices just fine?

The only thing that I find shocking: Jesse & Sharpton haven’t had word one to say about any of this.

Like the Hampton Roads area doesn’t have enough racial issues to contend with.

Everyone should read some of the comments followig the article at the link. Either this was posted this afternoon, or I missed it while at the site this morning.

Lainie - I can’t agree with you more.

Even listening to talk radio, I hear people calling in DEFENDING all of this with the most laughable, intellectually dishonest logic imaginable.

I believe however that this is doing more harm to Obama because the message is seems to be:
“This is all Common place, justifiable, and We have no problem being Public and Vocal about it” , and frankly, that’s is the wrong answer.

“Typical White People” understand that they cannot speak up about Race one way or the other- lest they be targeted as racist.
But I’ll bet that this seemingly global lack of condemnation by the Black community is quietly changing the minds of many liberals who were planning on voting for Obama.

We are told that Wright speaks out against the white-run US in "the prophetic tradition"

Prophets are supposed to speak directiy to sinners who need to repent.

True prophets do not speak to white sinners from the pulpit of black churches. (As Wright is doing again in Norfolk)

Wright is a "non-prophet."

I read a couple of music blogs where the writers are of the “we’re young and invented this brand of progressiveness” variety. They are true blue Obama fans, for SHORE. Their postings and rantings have very little to do with any actual issues — it’s all about Obama’s message of hope. {gah.}

I should start asking them pointed questions. ‘Do you agree with Dr. Wright? Do you attend church yourself? Do you think Obama owes any explanation for a stance taken by a church to which he tithes and expresses his ‘truth’ in spirituality?’

I hope you’re right about Typical White People, but not only is there no real condemnation, there are no calls from whites asking black leaders to condemn Wright’s racism.

Seriously, what is up with Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton’s deafening silence? They agree with Wright? Are they scared of offending black voters by saying anything against the racism?

No calls from anyone to condemn Wrights message from either side.
Its actually a Historical repeat of the Clinton years, whereby; something indefensable occures, the press and the Liberals go silent for several days to get a read on what the Group Line is to be, then slowly the spin and smooth over takes place. Finally, its deemed old news and forboten to bring up.

I believe that “typical whites” in any position TO ask have learned that they will be shunned and targeted as racist for trying to create social discord or instigate conflict. This seems to be the standard procedure.

As for Jessie Jackson- I did see a Fox news guy on TV trying to ask Jackson about it and the reporter came as close to being physically assaulted as is possible without actually being struck, by one of Jackson’s racist goons

You’re probably right about the Typical White People. How sad.

I promise, right now, if I ever happen to be in talking distance of any of these people, I’ll demand an answer. :)

You know, Ann Coulter is the TWP that isn’t afraid to call people out. Has she already written a column on it? I quit reading her regularly.

Good for the Fox news guy at least! We need more footage like that.

As a TWF* I'd really like to go over to old Virginia and sit in with the congresgration of the Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church when Reverend Wright ignites his sermon.

But I don't know... if I could pass the physical!
