Obama's Speech Applauded -- By Republican Foes
GOPers and Conservatives Say Candidate's Speech Didn't End Wright Controversy
By JAKE TAPPER
March 19, 2008
Campaigning in North Carolina today, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., enjoyed overwhelmingly warm reviews from the media and the crowd in Charlotte for his speech about race and his controversial former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
But for far different reasons, Republican political consultants were delighted with the speech, as well. Looking ahead to November, GOP strategists say Obama did not remove Wright as a campaign issue.
"He didn't explain why he continued to attend a church whose minister has a long history of divisive and hate-filled rhetoric, when the fundamental message of Obama's campaign is unity and bring us together," said Republican pollster Whit Ayres.
Republicans say they will combine Wright's anti-American rhetoric with other moments such as Obama's removal of his American flag pin because he felt it had become a substitute for true patriotism, or his not covering his heart during the national anthem last summer.
Other incidents, such as Obama's accepting money from a member of the Weathermen Underground or Michelle Obama's statement about feeling proud of the United States "for the first time in her adult life" because of her husband's campaign, may also be revisited.
Though the details may be inconsequential to some voters, and may be unfair, they may raise doubts about the candidate in other key constituencies.
"Blue collar white voters, what we used to call Reagan Democrats, are very patriotic people," Ayres said, "and if there is any argument that Obama is not as patriotic as they are, it can be a real problem, particularly in states like Pennsylvania."
Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh told listeners, "He's opened this can of worms and this stuff it's going to keep trickling out there's more like this."
Others see a more diabolical motive to the attack on Obama's relationship with Wright.
"There are legitimate elements to the controversy, but there is just no question it is going to serve as a cover for some impulses about race," said Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics.

Operation CHAOS is in full swing.
LOL....getting more popcorn.
There are some in the audience who are not clapping for Tinkerbell, and we think these awful people are mainly Republicans.
The vetting of Mr Obama has just begun. Details will emerge from Kenya to Indonesia to Black Liberation Theology. The left won't care. Others will.
Obama would have to have worked with the Black P Stone gangs in South Chicago during his activism period. That needs to be researched.
Mr. Obama recalled the opening lines of the Arabic call to
prayer, reciting them with a first-rate accent. In a remark that
seemed delightfully uncalculated [...], Mr. Obama described the
call to prayer as "one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at
sunset."

That so? I think I’ll buy one as a souvenir.

So Larry, are you trying to say that it’s racist to point out that Rev. Wright is a racist? Just what are you saying? Come out and just say it, don’t beat around the bush.
I should find his email and push him on that.
What was there to explain? Someone who has been intimately associated with wright for as long as obama portrays a man that is as racist as the man he protects.
I don't own one yet - but I will.
Conservatives enjoyed the speech. The RATS are wetting themselves over the speech. That's a TOTAL win-win for Hussein - eh?
Obama is a pr***, simple as that.
Sabato could tell us what was really going on in the I66 rest area when Governor McGreevy drove down to "meet some friends" too, but he won't.
EXACTLY. It might even work for a little while. But Obama has lost a lot of trust among TWPs. (Typical White Persons)
That's news. The Weather Underground story has yet to grow legs.
and that is one of the reasons the (R)’s have no shot of winning come Nov. 4, 2008, NO CHANCE WHAT-SO-EVER!!!
The guy retired so they can state this. LOL
I know one thing for a fact! Senior citizens that vote in huge numbers saw and heard Pastor Wright, saw and heard Obama's speech, will vote McCain!
Obama is no different than John Kerry, latching on to approx 15 percent of his real history and embellishing or hiding the rest from the U.S. people.
Obama may try the “no big deal, it's really whities interpretation problem, but it will not gain traction. I have never considered myself a racist, nor would the people that I worked with, or people that worked for me. But this really gets under my skin. A freak-show racist preacher with a long history of being one and a pandering empty suit rookie Senator giving softball criticism to a racist.
Brag Obama, his wife and his religous mentor are all racists. And, they seem to have know problem whipping their younger generation into a frenzy to despise their country. God damn THEM.
