At a small VFW hall in Charlotte, NC, today, former president Bill Clinton contemplated a McCain/Clinton general election matchup, saying that it would one between "two people who loved this country" without "all this other stuff that always seems to intrude itself on our politics."
"I think it would be a great thing if we had an election year where you had two people who loved this country and were devoted to the interest of this country," said the former president. "And people could actually ask themselves who is right on these issues, instead of all this other stuff that always seems to intrude itself on our politics."
In the wake of controversy over comments made by Barack Obama's former minister, Clinton's comments could be seen as an effort to draw attention to the issue of patriotism in a state with a high population of veterans.
The former president made the comments to less than 80 audience members at an invite-only event focused on veterans issues. The audience was subdued as Clinton gravely outlined a message of patriotism and honor for military service, The small sea of navy-blue VFW caps nodded along in agreement.
Take away ten of the cameras and fifty degrees Farenheit, and this could have been a John McCain event in Waterloo, Iowa, in November 2007.

I'd settle for just one.
“””I think it would be a great thing if we had an election year where you had two people who loved this country and were devoted to the interest of this country,...
I’d settle for just one.””
The most important thing about the quote is that Clinton is talking about a Clinton vs McCain matchup. What he’s saying (and you have to read between the lines) is that Obama doesn’t love the country.
I agree!
Bubba isn't allowed around large groups any more--Hillary doesn't want him to do any more damage to her campaign.
The audience was subdued as Clinton gravely outlined a message of patriotism and honor for military service...
The president who loathed the military speaking to honorable veterans. No irony there. If he came to speak to any audience of which I was a member, I'd walk out.
So OK...Hillary may love our country.. the only question is how more more does she love Chinese money??
Fortunately, Bubba does not have to worry much about stumbling across large groups these days since he is campaigning for Hillary.
Yes...didn’t Bill enroll in draft avoidance studies in the UK ?
“I loathe the military”
Bill Clinton, circa 1970
I am LOVING THIS!
Best political theatre of my lifetime.
“He was lamenting that these kind of distractions ‘always seems to intrude’ on political campaigns. This consistent with his criticism of the ‘politics of personal destruction,’ which dates back 16 years.”
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
This phrase at the end is hilarious, Bill Clinton is the original master of the “politics of personal destruction”.
“What hes saying (and you have to read between the lines) is that Obama doesnt love the country.”

It ain’t rocket science to decipher that but it is one of the few times Slick Willy has been caught telling the truth even though it was only implied.
The racism is part and parcel of the Anti-Americanism! They are one and the same. It is obvious that when Wright calls on God to damn America he is referring to White America. He certainly is not calling for damnation of his black followers. It really is all one thing, not two seperate issues.
I agree. But if you are Clinton running against Obama or McCain running against Obama, you first call it anti-Americanism, you get more political mileage using that as a starting point than you do with the attacking racism. If you do it that way, when Obama goes on the defensive it will become more clear that it is about racism as well as anti-Americanism.
Very good points. Particularly regarding the inference that the congregation’s reaction is an indication that it wasn’t the first time they had heard this from Wright.
