John McCain might be a sure thing to be crowned the GOP nominee, but experts say claims that his family is related to a Scottish king are pure fiction. McCain wrote in a 1999 memoir that his great-aunt was descended from Robert the Bruce, who reclaimed Scottish independence in 1314. Medieval experts looked through records and concluded the claim was "a load of baloney," as one genealogist told the Guardian.
The Scottish experts couldn't find any links between McCain and Bruce, although one historian noted that the Scottish warrior-king had a dozen children with up to 200 million distant descendants. "In that sense McCain probably is descended from Bruce. So am I. So are you. So is everyone," he said. McCain's memoir also claims a family connection to Charlemagne.
The McCain family name also comes from a man who climbed mount McCain in Tibet in the 1950s.
Frankly, who the hell cares?
I'd say McCain is definitely in that bloodline.
Pretty much every family I ever met has some famous name claimed in it’s history.
Frankly, McCain cared enough to fib about it.
This is really important. Good thing someone took the time to write a news article about it.
In my experience, almost every Mississippi white family — like the McCains — has a great-aunt who “cooked the books” regarding the family’s genealogy.
(Same situation in my family!)
It’s just a “southern thing” that the British and you yankees will never understand!
I am related to the guy that invented edible underwear, does that count?
Robert the Bruce? Who cares? Now, if he had been related to Bob Wills, Ernest Tubb or Audie Murphy I could consider him royalty. ;o)
McQueeg should have consulted Arlen (Scottish Law) MacSpecter. He is the expert on all things Scottish, you know!
Despite his past betrayals.
I'm not holding my breath.
Lighten up, dude. McCain even claims to be a conservative, and no one believes that for a minute. And, none of us will even bat an eye if he claims to be Marie Antoinette, miraculously escaped the guillotine, still around and looking perky two hundred years later.
And I'm not sure why when I hear the term "Mt. McCain" I think automatically of the largest pile of bovine scat in the world.
If that be the case and if Mel really studied his history, Robert the Bruce was a disgrace. He wanted the crown so badly he turned traitor to William Wallace and brought about Wallace’s death. That’s not something I would want to brag about. That begs the question: how many people did McPain betray to get the nomination?
In trying to make your point - you missed the common thread that the names you listed share - not to mention many many many other great military leaders and heroes, country singers, patriots, pioneers, Indian fighters, cowboys, and Presidents - even our beloved Ronald Reagan. They were of Scots-Irish decent. Of which, if it was not for their fighting spirit, you would be still be paying taxes to the Crown.
My favorite quote:
“If all else fails, I will retreat up the valley of Virginia, plant my flag on the Blue Ridge, rally around the Scotch-Irish of that region, and make my last stand for liberty amongst a people who will never submit to British tyranny whilst there is a man left to draw a trigger.”
George Washington, at Valley Forge.
